I used to be really good at math until I took a hiatus from college 2012-2015. Drexel has a science requirement where I have to take Chem or Physics. I’m fine with arithmetic, algebra, and derivatives, but I struggle with trigonometry. Which do you think would be easier for me? Chem?
Physics 1 (mechanics) has a lot of trig. Chem just mostly has algebra.
Chem would be easier in the sense it doesn’t require any trig. The concepts are still difficult. Chem requires more algebra based math, so you may succeed more. I haven’t taken college chemistry or physics yet (I’ll be a freshman this fall) but I have taken AP chemistry and AP Physics. I’m not quite sure how AP level classes compare to college courses, however, trig isn’t my best subject either, and I had a much higher grade in AP chem.
Still try your best to review trigonometry as it is a very useful skill to have. Good luck!
Take chem. The math in chem is limited to algebra and the focus/main difficulty of the course is definitely in the concepts rather than the math. Physics is very trig-heavy, and at least at my college, also very calculus-heavy (knowing multivariable calculus was necessary for the problem sets).
Thanks for the responses guys,
I didn’t take physics in high school so I wasn’t familiar with upper level physics. I did take chem though.
Are you sure the requirement doesn’t allow you to take astronomy or general education science classes for non science major?
If not, then chemistry (for non science majors if possible as you’ll likely be mixed with super competitive Premeds.)
With the skills you mentioned, I’m going to second the chem recommendations. It’s mostly formulas and basic algebra, and it’s really fun to learn about, in my opinion. Chem labs are a lot more fun than most basic physics labs, too, if you have a required lab component.
Can you take earth science? If not, then I would take chem.
From Drexel’s website:
Select two of the following: 6.0
BIO 100
Applied Cells, Genetics & Physiology
or BIO 101
Applied Biological Diversity, Ecology & Evolution
CHEM 151
Applied Chemistry
PHYS 151
Applied Physics
I am definitely going to take Ecology/Evolution, and then my other choice is between chem & physics. There’s also general elective space for science classes but either way I have to take chem or phys
BTW from the course catalog here’s the descriptions for chem & physics.
PHYS 151 Applied Physics 3.0 Credits
Non-calculus-based introductory physics for business majors. Covers basic mechanics and simple harmonic motion, followed by an introduction to more advanced topics such as relativity, electromagnetism, and quantum phenomena.
CHEM 151 Applied Chemistry 3.0 Credits
For business majors. Covers physical and chemical properties of substances used in consumer products. Provides qualitative introduction to required principles, including atomic structure and the elements, bonding and compounds, and the chemistry of carbon compounds and polymers. Uses examples from the areas of food and nutrition, pharmacology, and the petrochemical industry.
What is the highest math you’ve taken so far?
Business calculus 1. However, I think this choice is going to ultimately come down to which has better teachers
Is Business calculus 1 an acceptable prerequisite for physics?
For applied physics yes
