College Class 2018

I’m excited for next semester. I’m taking two classes with a professor I had this semester whose class I really enjoyed - he even emailed me telling me that he was excited to work with me in the spring.

I’m taking a class on International Relations. The professor received great reviews and I love Int’l Relations and the class itself is one of the most popular in the entire department. (Political Science - we don’t have a separate department for International Relations)

I’m taking Calculus. I ended up with a really good professor - all of his reviews on RMP (and he has about 35-40) state that not only is he an excellent professor, but he’s excellent in that he makes Calculus easy for humanities majors to understand, which is great. A lot of the kids who were posting said that they were English and History majors who needed to take Calc as part of an Honors College requirement and that the professor made the course material really clear and enjoyable. I’m probably gonna take it P/F though since I’m not entirely confident I can pull off a solid A.

I’m taking a honors freshman seminar on gender - I’m not too sure how I feel about it. I’ve always been interested in issues regarding the women’s movement and gender constructs, but I know some of the girls in the class are really, really passionate about it, which is good, but at the same time, I know that they became that way through Tumblr rather than through conventional/traditional/modern feminist literature. I’ve always had issues with the way social justice movements take shape in Tumblr - they typically become radicalized and warped to the point that they’re barely recognizable.

:) I’m super excited for the spring - but I’m certainly enjoying this month off.

I’m pretty excited for next semester too. Not really sure why, seeing as my schedule is not set yet.

I’ve got “the worst” professor for my math class in linear algebra/differential equations, who apparently makes things 1000x more complicated than it is… but then again the professors who teach the course generally suck. So that’s fun… not really. I’ve actually (luckily) seen some of the material before but not sure how much that’ll help.

Then I’m taking the intro CS class again. If I don’t do well this time, then perhaps it’s time I thought of doing something else… not quite sure what though.

I’ve decided to take the minimum number of units, which for me is 13. So I have this seminar for 1 unit, leaving me with one space for another class. For now, I’m in an English class which, since Berkeley didn’t process my AP units until recently so my registration status was still a lowly freshman, quite frankly sucks… I mean, it’s not as bad as if I decided on rhetoric or philosophy (known to be hard/a crap ton of work) but still. Meanwhile, I’m on the waiting list (about a third of the way there) for a linguistics class. Linguistics sounds kind of interesting to me, and this particular class fulfills two of my requirements, so it would be a good class to take.

I know this is pretty early, but does anyone have plans for the summer? For me right now, unless something happens, I don’t think I’ll get an internship so I’m probably going to take a harder class (everyone says summer versions are easier) + english at a community college during summer.

I don’t have anything interesting planned for the summer. I’m probably just going to work. I’m not going to take summer classes.

I’ll probably be working as an instructor at the math summer program where I worked last summer. I’m applying to other programs/internships as well, mostly just for the experience of applying.

Does anyone know when the Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual sale starts in stores? I know its already going on online - and Bath and Body Works is having their sale in stores now (usually the two run at the same time). I’m in need of some new leggings.

I’m applying to a bunch of research internships.

I feel like I’m not doing anything interesting… Oh well. I figured out by my calculations that as long as I don’t mess up too badly, I might be able to graduate a semester early.

So the main reason I don’t like shopping much is because I have a hard time finding things that fit properly (like, usually, jeans are too long or the hip/waist is too big)… One of my friends dragged me shopping, so I recently discovered that American Eagle jeans fit really well, but they’re expensive. They’re on sale right now but I’m not sure if I’m going to have enough cash before the sale ends. (That’s another problem… since for some reason my family thinks I have a ton of clothes – which was true in like middle school but I’ve grown since then – I don’t get allowance/money to use for clothes)

I’m pretty excited for next quarter as well! My last college quarter was really STEM-based, but this time almost all my courses are humanities-related. I’m hoping to become a bit more well-rounded by taking some music and art history classes before diving into the wild (ha) world of Animal Science next fall.

This summer, I’m planning on taking a monthlong course on captive raptor management and spending time with family and friends. Next year I’m probably going to be applying to REU’s and the like as well, so we’ll see how that goes!

This is actually pretty funny. I had a dream last night that I was back in high school, and I was just a miserable person. I hated it. I’m so glad to be out of there.

@preamble1776‌ forget VS, Vera Bradley is having a 50% of everything sale

@Violet1996‌ I love me some Vera Bradley but I really need yoga leggings, LOL.

I’m definitely excited for school again. Honestly, I’ve been a bit miserable at home. I need to go back. I’ve been making my break productive by beginning to teach myself French. I’m actually really enjoying it and hoping I can continue this even on top of my school work.

I’m excited for the spring semester because I’ll be taking German (love learning languages), a Physics course (it’s a huge blow-off compared to other STEM courses at the school and I have two good friends of mine in the class as well, should be fun), Econ (excited to see if I like the subject or not), and hopefully an International Politics course (if I can get in). If I can’t get into IP then I’ll just take Calculus I. If I can’t even get into Calc, then I’ll just take some random course that fulfills a distribution requirement. Anyways, I’m pumped. However, I’m not pumped to see my grades for this semester because there’s just too much uncertainty.

@TinnyT‌ You haven’t seen your grades yet? I thought my school as late for posting them on the 26th – when do you expect to see them?

My grades were kinda bad this semester, had a tough time adjusting, but I did pass all of my classes, some w/better grades than others. Definitely shooting for straight A’s in the spring though, now that I know what to expect. I love the fact that all my classes will be STEM; I enjoy humanities, but there’s something about the objectivity of STEM that puts my mind at ease/makes things less stressful. Only exception’s a pass/fail dance class (to relieve stress precisely). Super excited to start. Get to apply for sophomore housing right away, which should be fun -really looking forward to apartment living w/my friends next yr. Will step into leadership for a club I’m in in a few months. Getting back into my sports as well (lack of exercise is depressing me lol). Also looking forward to exploring LA a bit more. :)

Has anyone taken an online class yet? I just registered for one for the winter to keep busy. I’m wondering what it will be like. The class is team development and is solely based on group work, discussions, and overall effort. Professor sees everything thankfully. As an employed commuter student, it would be difficult to arrange group meetings if I took the class in person.

@preamble1776‌ My friend told me they are coming out Jan 2. So apparently then. The thing is, I hope they don’t email parents or anything that our grades are out because I leave the 4th and I would much rather tell my parents my grades over the phone than in person (regardless if they are good or bad).

@TinnyT I don’t think they’ll notify your parents. During my frosh orientation, they said that you have to give some sort of waiver or consent for the University to contact your parents about your academic performance. They said even if your mother or father called the registrar and begged them to tell them your grades, they wouldn’t be at liberty to, because of your right to privacy.

Ohhh ok, good to know.

It is called FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) – I got this from the Department of Education’s website –

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student (18 or older) in order to release any information from a student’s education record. (34 CFR § 99.31):

Happy New Year everyone!
