College Class 2018

@stugace - I wouldn’t worry TOO much about theft. After all, your roommate is living there too and presumably doesn’t want their own valuables stolen. Moreover, most kids entering college want to avoid the sort drama that would come about by stealing. You can invest in certain security measures (portable safes, etc.) to store your items when you aren’t in the room.

I’m ready for classes to start. I feel like I haven’t been in school for a long time, but at the same time, summer is flying. It’s hard to believe that I was finished with everything on April 30th.

I just remembered that I have to take this test to be able to take my curriculum class in the fall. It seems like it’s the SAT’s all over again…LOL.

What month do your classes start? My classes start the second week of September which I don’t think is late enough to justify how long they keep us during the spring (we start in February and end in late May; literally a week after high school seniors get out.) I will not stand for this injustice.

@preamble1776, I start on August 24th.

Fall semester usually starts at the end of August and ends the second week of December.

Spring semester usually starts the second week of January and ends either the last week of April or the first week of May.

@preamble1776 It seems your late end is due to your start date. I started January 11th

@preamble1776 I start second-to-last week of August, and fall semester ends mid-December. Spring semester starts last week of January and we get out mid-May.

Labor Day messed everything up this year. I go back two weeks before Labor Day instead of one. I’m not used to that!

Has anyone else been playing around with his/her schedule throughout the summer?

@preamble1776, is there any specific reason why your school starts so late?

@NewBeginnings3 Not that I know of; it’s really bizarre. We start later than any other schools (public and private) in the state. I’m not complaining though because I sort of enjoy the whole idea of starting school in early-mid September when the weather starts to cool down.

I changed my schedule recently - I switched out one of my 300 level Pol Sci classes for a different 300 level one and I changed a gen. ed from a philosophy class to a history class.

I recently changed my schedule.

I was originally going to take Physics II, but it’s only offered at 3PM this semester on MWF. My internship offered to keep me on payroll throughout the year so I could come work on breaks or if I happened to have a free afternoon. Taking physics out of my schedule allows me to be done by noon on Friday, so I’ll be able to go work then. It pays double that of my on-campus job so I really want to be able to take advantage of the offer. So I’ve dropped physics II, and I’m taking geology instead.

I’m contemplating adding a class called Moral Issues in Business. It’ll put me at 19 credits, which I’m not particularly thrilled about, but it’s online and only half-term so I’ll be done in mid-October. My best friend is taking it so I’ll know we’ll be able to split the readings and help each other out but I’m still not sure. It’ll be nice to get my ethics requirement knocked out in 2 months but 19 credits isn’t exactly easy, and I’ll be working too.

At first, I was going to make my classes all on MWF, but changed my mind after seeing a poster on here be dissuaded from doing so. All of my classes will be spread out on Mon-Fri, but they’ll be bunched up in the morning for work-flexibility.

Question: If classes start on August 24 for me, when should work-study/non work-study jobs be available? So far, there’s only one that has a desired starting date of August 17, which is pretty close. All others want people to start in July.

I just rearranged my schedule.

The way that my schedule is now is I will have class from 9 - 11:50 on MWF, which is great.

On Tuesday evenings, I’ll have a class from 6:00 - 6:50, and on Thursday evenings, I’ll have a class from 6:00 - 8:30.

I like the way that this looks now because originally, I had a class at 12:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then I had those two evening classes. I figured that it’ll be easier just to have to go to school in the evening on those days instead of going to class at 12:30, leaving, and then going back in the evening. I’ll probably end up changing it again, LOL.

I wanted to add an online science class from another campus, but registration for online classes at other campuses does not open up until seven days before the start of the semester, which is August 17th. I’m pretty sure a lot of the seats will be full by then, which is a pain. I always have to constantly watch the registrar because people constantly add/drop during the first week and a half. If I could register for a science class, then I will be done with the science general education requirements.

Ugh, scheduling is so annoying.

“starting school in early-mid September”

@preamble1776

quarter system? Semester schools go from August-May. Quarter schools go from Sept-June :stuck_out_tongue:

Wait, are you asking me if I’m on the quarter system? My school is on the semester system (at least I’m pretty sure we are… we have a Fall semester where a student takes anywhere from 12 to 18 credits and a Spring semester w/ 12 to 18 credits)

We start in September and end in May (very late May.)

@Lilliana330

My school also starts September on the semester system.

S1: September (10ish) - December (15ish)
S2: January (10ish) - April (End)

@preamble1776 Yes…ahhh nvm, that’s odd lol

For those of you with internships -

Do you generally find yourself doing challenging work similar to the regular employees, or do you do a lot of grunt work?

Normally I do the exact same things as real employees. Granted, I do sometimes get the monotonous tasks or the somewhat undesirable jobs, but all in all it’s real work. But today my boss really didn’t have anything for us interns to do (we just finished a big project) so we spent about 3 hours washing company cars, lol. It was actually kind of a nice break doing mindless work though!

@baileyj57 - I do the same sort of work as regular employees but not the same amount (I get less.) When there’s no work to do, they let me out early (which basically happens every time.) It’s not challenging though; just a lot of emailing people, working with Excel sheets, and researching/vetting politicians.

Got into my school’s legendary Intro to Wines class. Stoked for the semester to start!

@Coriander23 - You’re underaged, missy.
[-X LOL

Ya girl Preamble just copped an on-campus job as a TA making 15 bucks an hour for the fall. I’m AMPED.
