College Class 2018

@Violet1996 - The 15 page paper was for a graduate English seminar, so thankfully that’s not the “norm” for me – my senior year, I have to do an honors thesis through the Poli Sci Dept that is between 70-100 pages. That should be exciting (read: agonizing.) 5-6 page essays are tricky; they’re not long enough to justify starting too far in advance but they’re also not short enough to just bust out in 30 minutes. I also don’t “draft” which I know is really bad, lol… My essays start with the first word and end with the last.

@Vctory - Yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and take the major course. I might meet with him a few times to discuss internship or research opportunities for the summer.

My Poli Sci professor told me that I was the only person to receive an A on the midterm. This is both really great but also sorta terrible because on the one hand, I’m happy I got an A on what was apparently a really hard assessment, but at the same time, I literally studied for 40+ hours for that test and now I know I can’t just relax and I’m gonna have to put that level of work into everything else. :frowning:

@preamble1776 I don’t draft either, unless I’m required to submit an outline. I just do better flying by the seat of my pants! That thesis sounds horrendous though, but I guess when you spend enough time researching something that it can be that long, it probably won’t be too hard to do!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on CC. Mainly because I switched up my schedule, but that meant the end of any kind of life outside of classes. I’m on waiting lists, so basically I don’t know what classes I’ll be in until much later.
@preamble1776 I always just turn in whatever I get on paper haha

@quidditchcat - The final step of all of my writing is essentially just resignation, LOL.

I resubmitted the major declaration form on Thursday. The form is incredibly confusing, so I’m going to try to avoid having to submit it again. I changed to the BS degree plan from a BA and added my second minor. I wasn’t planning on adding the minor yet, but one of my profs told me that they look at what the current majors and minors declared in the department need to take when determining what courses to offer for the next semester.

My registration for spring semester is tomorrow. All the courses I want to take still have spots, which feels weird. I’ve had to override into my math and CS classes every semester so far. Hoping that I won’t for next semester!

I registered today. I had priority registration so I was in the first “wave” of students to sign up for classes - one class that I signed up for at 7:45 AM literally filled up by 9 AM - and by 3PM, the waitlist for it was already full. Granted, it was a pretty tiny class to begin with and an honors course that a lot of students in the Honors College need, but still. I thought that I was being neurotic by registering so early but I guess I was justified.

Does anyone get paranoid that “niche” classes will get canceled because no one will sign up for them?

Also, thank God for November. I love November. It is my favorite month.

I registered today and I got all the courses I wanted! I also have priority registration, but ours still goes by class, so the seniors and juniors have already registered. The rest of the sophomores register tomorrow at 7 am.

We have courses at my school that literally fill in 6-45 seconds, so you always have to register right when registration opens. Our classes sizes are really small though, and many courses only have one section. My largest class this semester is 33 people and its one of the largest classes in terms of enrollment. The vast majority of classes are capped under 20 students.

@preamble1776 yeah, I know what you mean lol. One of my friends (who registers tomorrow) is the only one that we know of registering for the theater course “Intro to Directing”. She’s a little worried about that.

I go to the University of Competitive Bastards (UC Berkeley), but due to the ancient web system (like it hasn’t been updated since 1998!) it’s not possible to fill up a class in 6-45 seconds.

My schedule is pretty much up in the air right now. I only know for sure that I will get one of my classes. The rest, I won’t know for sure until next semester starts. Which is kind of scary. I’m planning on 2 CS classes, a language class, and a psych class. I only know for sure I’ll get into the language class.

All upper divs, finally. (Although, depending on circumstances, I might have a lower div heavy fall). I’m convinced lower division classes are designed to see which students are the most interested, i.e. I find most lower divs extraordinarily boring (though they’re still hard) but upper divs are very interesting. So upper divs don’t feel as hard since I’m actually interested.

That’s so bizarre that classes fill up so fast for you all! I’ve never had a problem enrolling in what I need (except my first semester, but that’s because I had a late freshmen orientation session). I can wait 2-3 days after my enrollment time and still generally get what I need.

If a class fills up that quickly at my school they usually open up another section or add a few more seats.

@baileyj57 - Yeah, a lot of professors will just override the cap for a few students. Usually the philosophy is “if the physical space of the classroom can fit another student, then I’ll take another student.”

@preamble1776 Don’t you find it difficult to wake up and get to a 745am class during the height of New England winter? (jan feb)

^Wait, there’re such things as 7:45am classes? My first class isn’t until 5:30pm today, and that’s STILL too early (prefer 6:00pms).

@phantzm12 The class isn’t at 7:45 AM - I registered for it at 7AM (my registration window starts at 7.) However, for my 8AMs, it’s not too bad - I naturally wake quite early and I find my commute pretty peaceful. The only problems I encounter are train delays the day after a big storm.

lol I LOVE 8 AMs. Unfortunately as a potential CS major (not declared yet) nobody agrees. So usually the earliest class is 10 or 11. :frowning:

Honestly it’s at times like these I wonder if I’m even in the right major. Especially since when I want to work on stuff (re: group projects), everyone’s sleeping, and when I want to sleep, everyone wants to work.

No one seems to understand my love for early morning classes. I love getting done with all my courses by/before noon. It frees up the entire day.

I’m not thrilled about 8AM classes, but I do love getting done by noon everyday.

Next semester all of my classes are MWF between 8 and 1, so that’ll be freaking fantastic. Done shortly after noon 3 days a week, and 2 off.

I’d be done at noon if it weren’t for one of my CS classes :frowning:
But upper division classes are rarely at 8 AM, sadly, so I might no longer be able to have 8 AMs all week long.

My schedule for next semester seems so great but incredibly scary at the same time. MW is 8am - 12:30pm. TR is 930am - 12:30pm. Ill have the entire day free but I’m so scared because I don’t even know if I’ll be able to pull that off in a spring semester (especially because I live in Connecticut  ). I find it so difficult to wake up in Jan/Feb. And driving at 7am in the snow in a car that is itself frozen is horrible…

Spring '15 my school was closed for almost the entire month of February because of inclement weather and the impact it had on public transportation; I remember that one of my friends had a class that met on Monday evenings and her first class meeting was in the 4th week of the semester since school was canceled every Monday prior.

A lot of people were extremely upset about it because they spent thousands of dollars on courses with the hope that they’d be able to actually attend. My friends and I were fortunate enough to have the full scholarship so we weren’t sweating days off as X hundreds of dollars down the drain or whatever, but I do distinctly remember having to sit for midterm exams that were based on material from literally 3 lectures… LOL.

Hahahah yeah I remember Spring '15! I had an 8am econ class which was cancelled for half the semester lol.
