College Class 2018

I find that when I have to write an argument essay and I feel lazy, I usually opt to take a really strong stand on whatever it is I’m arguing (rather than qualifying or nuancing my thesis) and it makes my essays sound like deeply impassioned manifestos. LOL.

So, education majors have to take an exam before entering into their major. I took the exam yesterday, and I did really well. The test is composed of reading, math, and writing modules, so you could say it was somewhat like the SATs, but I think this exam was easier. The exam was nice because it was computerized, so I was able to get immediate feedback on the reading and math modules, and I will find out my score on the writing module in a few weeks. I’m assuming I will pass (at least I hope because I am majoring in secondary ed English!)

I thought I was going to fail the math portion. The math was considerably easier than the SATs because it was just basic algebra and geometry, but I was so mad at myself because I do not remember much from my geometry class in high school. I always preferred algebra. Oh well, at least that’s over!

Congratulations @NewBeginnings3 !!

I’m trying to create my schedule for next semester since courses have been posted online and dear God… my schedule is going to be all sorts of screwed up. I’m already looking at two one-night-a-week evening courses. My major department decided that they were apparently going to offer all mandatory upper division classes at literally the most bizarre times (Saturday mornings… Tuesday nights… etc.) :frowning:

Our fall schedule comes out after spring break is over (in just over a week- break just started!). I’m really nervous because the two courses (cryptography and coding theory; computer security- both highly relevant to what I want to do) I want to take for my majors in the fall are only offered once every two years, so it’s my only shot to take them. Hoping I don’t have any conflicts! I also need to take the last music theory course, which I was supposed to take this past fall but had a conflict with one of my major courses.

Everyone pray for me as I’m taking Calculus 1 and Chem 2 over the summer.

Chem 7-5 to 8-8
Calculus may 27- June something

@preamble1776, ugh that is so annoying. My schedule for fall looks pretty decent. I have to take three once-a-week classes for my major, but the college of education has them set up where one class is on Monday from 8-11, another falls on Wednesday from 8-11, and another falls on Friday from 8-11. I have amother one that is once a week, but it is only an hour and a half (still don’t understand how it’s three credits but only an hour and a half.) Then I have a Tuesday/Thursday class. So, I basically have one class per day except for Tuesdays. I’m pretty happy about that, especially since my classes end early in the day.

I fixed my schedule (somewhat) - I am only taking one one-day-a-week class, and it’s on Wednesday from 2-5 (two of my close friends are gonna be in it so that’ll be fun… or at the very least not totally excruciating) Other than Wednesday, I get out of class before noon everyday, which I’m pretty happy about. I’m taking a new on-campus job next semester and I prefer working after class, rather than in-between or before.

The weather for spring break this week has been so nice. I don’t want to go back to class next week.

When do you guys finish? I’m done on April 29th, and then I have to go back on May 3rd and 4th to take two finals. They won’t be hard because they are my writing finals. All I have to do is go and write two pages in-class on something we’ve read. The prof is a pretty easy grader, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

I have spring break from April 22-May 1st, I come back for 1 day of classes then finals start. I go home the 11th

Can we just take a minute to appreciate, Class of 2018, that we are almost done with half of our college career. 2 years already done!! Where did the time go?!

5 year club - BS/MS + co-ops lol

I know! Fall schedule is already out for us- just had a meeting with my advisor. Registration starts next week for us!

What are the fall schedules looking like, guys?

My first semester at a school away from home is going to be interesting. I have to take three classes for my major that are each once-a-week for three hours. They are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8-11. I need to take two other classes; I think one of them is once-a-week for an hour and fifteen minutes, and another is twice-a-week for an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s nice because I will be done on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11, so I have the rest of the day to do whatever I want. I don’t know if I’ll get a job the first year I’m there. I’ll have to see how things go. I’m excited!

My registration for fall isn’t until Monday, but I’m planning on taking academically:
Coding Theory
Probability
Computer Security w/lab
Tonal Harmony II: Chromaticism
Intro to Costume

I’m really excited for Coding Theory and Computer Security. It’s going to be interesting having two math courses (Coding Theory and Probability), and I’m not really looking forward to the latter, mainly because it’s a 9 am. Tonal Harmony II is the last course I need for the music minor, but it’s gonna be hard. Intro to Costume has a great professor and I’m excited to finally get to take a theater class (it counts for the dance minor), but it’s also a 9 am.

I’ll have 3 classes Monday and Wednesday and 2 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, which I think is a pretty good spacing. But I’ll have 9 am class every weekday but Fridays, which sucks because I am not a morning person at all. Tuesdays and Thursdays I also have a gap from 10:15 am until 3 pm, which will be odd. I’m hoping I can put lessons or rehearsals in that gap, else I’ll have to learn how to be productive during that time!

I’ll also be taking for credit:
private music lessons x2
music rep class (all music majors/minors have to take it)
orchestra
band
jazz combo
chamber music (I actually haven’t decided if I’m going to take this for credit yet)

Graduating a semester early - so I have three semesters left. After next semester (Fall 16) I am only going to have electives and my honors thesis left, I’m pretty excited.

Does anyone get really embarrassed talking about grades/GPA?

When I was in high school, I had no issue talking about grades with my friends because we were all sort of competitive when it came to academics so it was a natural thing to talk about test scores, grades, and so on - but in college (at least at my school) the culture is far more laid back and people don’t really talk about grades at all so I never talk about them - but then when people ask me about my grade on a test that was just handed back or my GPA, I feel really embarrassed disclosing it, especially if I know that I did better than the person asking. Like I feel guilty telling someone I got an A+ on an exam if the person asking got a C; even though they are the ones inquiring.

Someone asked me about my GPA today and I hesitated but then finally told them I had a 4.0 and their response was like “oh wow, that’s really solid” and I felt like setting myself on fire. I instantly felt the need to qualify it by explaining that my major is relatively easy compared to hard sciences and engineering, etc but at that point, it would’ve been really awkward so I just changed the subject.

I have a lot of Ws on my transcript because there were two semesters where I tried to take seven classes rather than five or six like a sane person. I’ve also attended two different universities, so my GPA at my current school only reflects about half of the college classes I’ve attempted. I wouldn’t feel comfortable just shouting out the number as if it meant anything, but I’ve never had anyone ask.

I haven’t really felt embarrassed, but my GPA is good enough while not being too unattainable or seen as high and mighty for mentioning it. I guess that’s the secret lol.

I understand the embarrassment - I would have the exact same in your situation. I would develop some sort of very quick deflection and use that - the long explanation isn’t needed, but a quick joke like “Oh I have a 4.0 but I’m just a mere X major” or something could work well - it immediately deflects without feeling like you need to hide it. Of course, if you’re talking to someone in your major, that doesn’t work sadly.

@halcyonheather - I wouldn’t say I “shout out” my GPA, if anything, I mutter it. lol.

@PengsPhils - Yeah, I’m probably gonna just qualify it with joking about how easy my major is the next time it comes up (though I hope it never comes up again, lol.)
