College football '25 season thread

You may want to make your plans knowing that the parking lot and traffic out of the arena may be a slow - and a huge production.

How did it go tonight? Not the game
 Dabo is in trouble. :grimacing:

Good lord that game was awful. For many reasons - not just the play which was terrible, but prior to the lightening delay we were roasting - it was 90 degrees prior to any humidity or anything and no shade. People were roasting, some poor lady passed out in the heat and tumbled down several rows of the grandstands before getting stuck - headfirst - between some bleachers. It was not great.

So by the time we got the lightening delay and mandatory clearing the stands my S25 was ready to leave. I think he was so disgusted with the play of the team (he’s one of those sports fans that REALLY lets it affect his mood) and pretty cranky due to the heat that there was no salvaging the rest of the game.

Annoyingly, Clemson locks almost all of their buildings on game day - even for students. He wanted to show us some of the buildings where he has class, we couldn’t get in. We thought we’d sit and cool down in the library and stay dry from the rain, he couldn’t get in. Eventually we got to the student center, which was unlocked.

It wasn’t particularly late, maybe 2:00ish, and he wanted a snack so we got some chick fil a shakes and fries
which I don’t even treat to since he used his meal points. Eventually one of his friends and his mom came by so we had a nice chat with them. Once the game restarted he wasn’t interested in going back (I think the beating down sun before the lightening delay did a number in his energy - and even with hefty sunblock application we were all burned). So we hung a little in downtown Clemson to buy a tshirt for my husband. S25 walked us back to our car, we drove him back to the dorm and that was that. He was tired and done with us, so we didn’t even try to make dinner with him work.

If he was interested we know some friends of his we’re going to a family tailgate that would have burgers, but the way he looked I hope he ate and went home and to bed. We had stopped at the tailgate pre-game and got a recommendation for a BBQ place in Greenville, so husband and I headed there for dinner. The parking lot and restaurant were packed, so a good sign and the food did not disappoint.

While I would’ve liked to spend more time with S25, I’ve spent a lifetime with rabid sports fans (from dad to spouse to kid) and I know that sometimes you just have to give them time and space to get over disappointment. But it doesn’t help that the Tigers haven’t played this poorly since well before S25 was born. I don’t know what’s going to happen with the team, Dabo has a hell of a contract, I don’t know if they can afford to fire him, even if they want to.

Well, that’s a bummer about most of that. I hope Clemson gets it together for your son’s sake.

The biggest bummer of it all is just sort of a general Kid Far Away complaint. His fall break is too short to come home, Thanksgiving won’t be good (late lab Tuesday night, then he wants to be on campus by Saturday for the big rivalry game against USC - even though it’s an away game he wants to be at school for it). So we won’t see him again until mid-December for winter break. It would’ve been nice to have a better weekend, but it just didn’t happen.

Both college kids teams won last week. Yeah! I will be heading to the game this weekend for Parents Weekend. Wish us luck!

Rut roh, @Hoggirl. Your coach just got canned!

Heck. Maybe he needs to return to lead the O-line at UGA. Oof. We are not looking good this season. I keep wondering what dirt Bobo has on the powers that be. When even I can anticipate his play calling (not that there are many to choose from), that is a bad sign. I was in a mood last night.

ETA: Congrats to the Bama fans. Even though that pains me to say.

Unfortunately, the NIL payments are changing the predictably of college football. This will affect coaches’ careers.

Should have waited for a few more losses. Buy out would have been less

But, is Arkansas concerned more about the buyout figure versus the recruiting and income losses from enduring more losses ?

Recruiting is the most important aspect of fielding a winning football team.

Some coaches have been slow to adapt to the changes. Personally, I like the greater parity we are seeing this season. I would love to see Vandy beat Bama this week. Who would’ve predicted that that would even be possible at the beginning of the season?

I am definitely not smart enough to know!

Vanderbilt beat Alabama last season due in large part to Vanderbilt’s QB Pavia, who is outstanding and outspoken. Pavia transferred in to Vanderbilt following his coach from another university.

Vanderbilt is a solid football team this year. Indiana University is another team that is capable of competing with the best.

Regarding future parity among college football teams, it may depend upon the amount of NIL money generated by supporters of individual teams. My concern is that this might limit parity despite the generous allowances afforded by the relatively new transfer rules/transfer portal.

Decades ago, Bear Bryant offered football scholarships to dozens of talented players who spent their college football years sitting on the bench. Bear Bryant just wanted to make sure that the competition didn’t get these talented players. Unfortunately, the old NCAA rules on transferring made switching schools and teams unwise as transfer players had to sit out for a year.

Big 12, I think you did a good thing here.

I hadn’t heard about that. Good for the Big 12.

Sad this dribble still happens. Really disgusting.

Glad the league did it. Would have also liked to hear that things were handled more proactively during at the game if possible (admittedly did not watch). For example if, after a warning, the refs gave a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty every time the chant started and if the coach made an announcement saying this chant was not OK. Terrible.

Your thought is right, but the ramifications from doing so are probably more than the school, the refs, and the league could handle.

Can the refs & the U Colorado coach direct the crowd ?

Due to widespread sports betting, individual athletes & coaches are receiving verbal threats from the stands. This is similar to the ugly chant. The NCAA needs to step up and take action after the fact and hope that it affects future crowds. No need to further incite the spectators by repeated penalties (which affects the wrong people & organizations).
