College football '25 season thread

There have been instances of penalties against the home team called due to crowd behavior but admittedly rare. I am glad the Big 10 did something.

Prime has been known to grab a microphone and tell the crowd to knock it off, but honestly I doubt if the refs or most of the coaches on the field could hear it. The student section now goes up a wedge shape (as it always did) so from about the 20 yard line to the end zone. Now they have extended it around the end zone curve (where it says Colorado) and the band sits at the end (on the ‘d o’ of Colorado) Anyway, very noisy in that bowl.

There is no excuse BUT, this is what happens when the game starts at 8:15 PM, on the ESPN schedule. Twelve hours of solid student drinking isn’t good. The visitor’s section is about as far away from the student section as possible. Sure some BYU fans buy seats in other sections, but they are scattered around the stadium and not possible that there were any big groups of Utah fans near the student section. Almost all seats are season tickets, so visiting fans are buying them in groups of 4 or 6.

I wish there were a way to assess the fine to the students who were shouting

UCLA has a new interim head coach and their new, outstanding QB from Tennessee seems to be more comfortable with his new team.

Penn State appeared sluggish (maybe due to the cross-country travel).

How is QB Arch Manning performing ?

If I recall correctly, he receives about $7 million per year in NIL payments from various sponsors/sources. Highest paid college athlete according to a recent article.

I think he’s performing like an average 1st year SEC QB - but that’s not what was expected of him. From what I’ve read - he’s a very talented kid and the expectations were set FOR him, he did not claim them and refused the NIL offered to him until he was a starter on the team. Too many believed the over-hype, but I don’t think it was him that set them. I still believe he will be a great QB - this is really his first year playing with a few games last year.

Also, a lot of pressure “living up” to the Manning name. (Of course his last name likely helped secure lucrative NIL deals as well.)

Even Marshall Manning is already doing TV spots with his father Peyton and Uncle Eli. I think Marshall is 13. Just a little bit of pressure although I think it is going to be there anyway so nice that the family helps the younger generation deal with it.

Lots of good football and upsets yesterday. Michigan has to play better. The next two week’s will show who they are this year. Potential is there.

In terms of team talent, if one believes in HS talent rankings, Penn State is ranked #10 and UCLA is amazingly ranked #26. The media appears to portray UCLA as being bereft of talent, but actually, they do have talent.

There has been a look at the win/ loss with cross country travel and the odds are against the team that has to travel over 2 time zones.

talent isn’t the issue. the problem is the ad. martin jarmond hired the previous coach, deshaun foster, who was woefully ill prepared after chip kelly took the money and ran. here’s a current list of alum now in the nfl. coaching them up is the key.

Great chart !

USMA-West Point (Army) has the least talent (by far !) among the 134 schools.

Illinois, Indiana, & Boise State coaches deserve a lot of credit based on talent against AP ranking.

Local news on discontent with Bill Belichick:

I really hope they get rid of him.

He was an obvious poor fit from the start as I noted long ago. Thise who hired him should lose their jobs. There are few key decisions, none bigger than this. It was an epic fail.

The Chancellor is not going to lose his job. He’s the GOP BOG’s handpicked business boy from Duke. They will pin any blame squarely on Bellichick.

A lot of people, me included, thought Bellichick was a terrible hire, but I thought the Chancellor with no academic background was a terrible hire too.
