College football '25 season thread

I wonder if it’s logistically possible for Kiffin to coach at all the SEC schools during his lifetime.

Agree Kiffin does not come off well. Glad Ole Miss did not let him continue to coach there.

FWIW Brian Kelly also took the LSU job after the regular season but before the bowl game (though not a championship game).

This situation can be fixed – the NCAA should institute a rule that teams cannot speak to coaches employed elsewhere until the season is over for all teams (the championship game is finished).

It’s interesting - some let their teams coach, others don’t.

On the flipside, a new coach is born - Pete Golding.

And will Florida’s or Auburn have another dud coach ? Everyone can’t win but all hire winners.

I like my Auburn coach hire. Looks like a real coach, finally!

One never knows. Hugh Freeze was a slimeball but a good coach - and they did pull the trigger too quick.

I always wonder about the cross country ones - like Bryan Harsin. How do you recruit.

In the end, even great coaches can stink - because only half can win and most coaches are likely great.

It likely comes down to how much you’re paying players though. Even Vandy is now in the game.

I will beg to differ on the “good coach” statement and the “trigger too quick.” Personally, I thought he was a horrible coach and they let him hang around 2 years too long. He is arrogant and narcisstic beyond belief. He had the opp to bring in really good QBs two different times but was sure he was the QB whisperer and could develop the below avg ones he paid for who could not handle a bad OL, and he wouldn’t recruit OL!!! Sorry, I am a season ticket holder and follow the details pretty closely as it is an investment to me. He was a waste of money. Looking forward to seeing how many decent OL players we can get over the next year or two and if we can keep the few good players we do have.

Its sports - you can differ - that’s what sports are all about

He had a great track record at Ole Miss - but hit the strip clubs or escorts too much.

Liberty gave him redemption.

On paper, if you don’t mind hiring a scumbag or ego maniac (which you tried to do with Lane Kiffin, btw) - then Hugh Freeze was a top choice. If Auburn didn’t hire him, another big program would have.

I think it comes down to what works - is James Franklin a great choice for Va Tech (egomaniac #2) - I’d say yes - but time will tell.

Will these up and comers be great? Some will, and some - like Neal Brown who was at WVU and now signed on at N Texas - or the next Troy or Tulane coach (now at Florida) - who knows.

Only so many can be great W/L wise is kind of my point I guess.

We’ll see if Mr. Golesh stands tall - he’s got a 50/50 chance….better if he’s got $$ to spend on players and coaches.

Yes, we all have our views and he needs a fan I guess. BTW, he cheated at Ole Miss and hurt their program - he bought players before it was legal and tried to throw the previous coach under the bus for what he did. My husband is an Ole Miss grad and he doesnt forget either. Freeze also threw his own players under the bus at Auburn - never owned up to anything, always somebody elses fault. I guess you can tell I have a bit of a visceral response to this person. I do not have good thoughts about his character even though I thought he deserved a chance when hired….he proved me wrong. If he stays in football, I hope he does better for wherever he shows up.

That’s sadly just keeping up with the joneses. Buying players is as old as my youth

Honestly, I didn’t think he deserved a chance. I’m not sure that Pat Fitzgerald deserves the $6 million a year chance he scooped up yesterday. Or Art Briles, just hired.

These guys are very flawed (not 100% sure about Fitzgerald but it certainly appears he turned a blind eye) - just like Joe Pa too at Penn State as much as everyone loved him. He turned a blind eye on Sandusky.

The things these guys do - they don’t deserve second chances and at multi million $ salaries to boot.

And yet it’s football and big money, so they get them….sadly.

What message does that send to society? Are Ws and Ls all that count? Sadly, yes.

Nice to see them come together for a good cause before the Big 12 Championship game.

Local BYU Alumni do something like this for the opposing team’s community at every away football game.

SEC Champions! :black_heart: Go Dawgs!
Feels so good to get that Bama monkey off our backs.

Georgia looking really strong. Alabama was dominated just as badly as BYU was in the the Big 12 game. Alabama should fall just as many spots in the rankings as BYU will but you know they won’t.

Can Indiana do it?

When it was 21-7, on 4th and 2 the had that horrible pass to the right. If they went left, easy first down and maybe it’d be closer. It would have been 21-14 but yes, Ga really owned this game .

Don’t think you can compare them to BYU which lost to TT twice. Bama beat UGA on the road in Athens.

What I don’t like is a 3 loss school like Bama in the playoffs. But an Ole Miss or Vandy or even Miami in the ACC aren’t playing in the conference final.

Should Bama or anyone be penalized for a third loss when they had to play an extra game ?

it’s all very unclear and certainly debatable in my opinion.

Absolutely. A three-loss school like TEXAS belongs in the playoffs, not Bama! :sign_of_the_horns: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Texas has the highest strength of schedule of anyone in the playoff talk and beat two of the teams slated to get in, one at a neutral site. UT also had the only one-score loss to OSU this entire season, and that was on the road (though we shall see what happens tonight). Does the committee walk the walk and reward non-conference games like it says it will? Why keep scheduling tough games if they aren’t weighted, as the committee said they would be?

We handed undefeated A&M its only loss the last week of the regular season. That kept them out of the SEC championship, which I must admit is enough to sustain me until next season. lol

I could see how we’d get left out, but the idea that a Tulane gets in and we don’t is maddening. Oh, well. I’ll also point out that we are the second-most lucrative college franchise and second-most watched college team this season. Everyone wants to see Arch Manning win or lose, depending on your bent and upbringing. We’ve made the semifinals the past two years and went 6-1 down the stretch this year. We are finally healthy. I hope our first-week loss by a TD to OSU, the defending national champion, on the road doesn’t keep US out. The commisioner left the door open for us this morning on College GameDay.

But it’s a 3 loss team and didn’t make the conference final. Nor did they beat a UGA level. I don’t know the current seeding but they have to finish behind Bama …so neither should go but Bama over UT.

to me, you should have to at least be in a conference final if you have 3 losses.

I was going to ETA but decided to post separately.

Texas is the only team to play five top 15 teams (we went 3-2). No one else played more than three so no one has a better record against top 15 teams.

Overall strength of schedule takes a toll. ND ranks 42, Miami is 44, Indiana is 45 and OSU is 46. Tulane is 77. Virginia is 82. NT, my alma mater, is 118. (I’ve lost track of who all has a chance so I just threw those last few in, even though it may be moot at thisi point). Texas is number EIGHT. Just saying that I can make a case if the committee is being honest about rewarding SOS. There needs to be some algorithm that numerically weights these kinds of things instead of depending on faves and eye tests, although I think Texas is helped by intangibles, many of which I stated earlier.

This Indiana-OSU game is EXCITING! I hate OSU, so I’m hoping Indiana wins.

Originally, I was hoping OSU would blow Indiana out, in order to make my Michigan loss feel better to me. But now that it’s close, GO INDIANA!

Congrats to the Hoosiers, wow!

Simply amazing. An “Island of Misfit Toys” won.

OSU has four probable 1st round NFL draft picks on defense alone.
