Recent years - dang. Such a lack of integrity throughout the program. Moore should have never been hired given the Stalions issue but they cared about national titles more.
From CNN
Chose not to renew the contract of its men’s ice hockey coach, Mel Pearson, after an investigation found that the program had a “toxic environment,’’ including pressuring students to lie on Covid-19 contact tracing forms and verbally assaulting female staff members.
Fired Matt Weiss, the co-offensive coordinator for the football team, after campus police said he had hacked into the accounts of student-athletes, mostly women, to steal intimate photos. He’s pleaded not guilty to federal charges stemming from the incident.
Investigated Howard – operating then under a zero-tolerance policy – after a staffer filed a Title IX complaint against him following an altercation about playing time for the head coach’s son.
Benched its then head football coach, Jim Harbaugh, twice during the 2023 national championship-winning season – a three-game self-imposed ban by the school at the start of the season for recruiting violations stemming from the Covid season and three more at the end handed down by the Big Ten for his involvement in a sign-stealing scandal, of which Harbaugh has denied he was aware.
Became the epicenter of a sign-stealing scandal that involved a staff member, Connor Stalions, posing in disguise on the sidelines during a game involving rival Michigan State.
Was handed major NCAA punishments that included a 10-year show cause penalty for Harbaugh, fines that could total nearly $30 million and four years’ probation for the sign-stealing scandal.
Went a game this season without its new head football coach, Sherrone Moore, after he was suspended for his role in the recruiting violations. Moore was expected to be suspended an additional game in 2026 in the wake of the Stalions investigation.
Spoken by the dad whose kid attends the Michigan of the South - yep, I still remember. I loved all your posts.
UGA football, has had, as you know, a lot of problems - several with fast driving. Not saying it’s the coaching staff’s fault. What happens when an 18 year old is making bank?
Admittedly, I’ve not seen any details on this - it seems hush hush at least in the media. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Likely but I don’t know their athletic standards but presumably less. But then again, you can be the highest caliber academically or even wealthy - and still commit a crime..
I was thinking last night - since you wrote back and still didn’t hear about the UGA shoplifting but you noted it sounds like a big nothingburger.
But I’m guessing, both you and I would be horrified if it was our kids and not the UGA football players.
What I have read about the UGA shoplifting incident is that it was a situation of a few cheap items (like $100 worth total) among a larger purchase of household supplies which were accidentally unscanned at self-checkout, as in the scanner didn’t register them. the players claim they had no intention to steal.
Is there more to it? I don’t know but I don’t know why these 2 players (who are probably paid pretty well) would risk things for a few bucks right before the playoffs.
As far as people alleging that UGA will give them a pass because they are on the team- Georgia has kicked plenty of players off the team for off-field stuff. if the players’ stories aren’t convincing- they will be kicked off. we will see what happens.
like every football team, Vandy included, there are a lot of good people on the team and a few bad apples too. way more good people, at least in the Georgia case. here’s one, for example:
UGA has got some bad apples. Not saying these kids - but hey react after.
And I’m guessing there’s more to it.
It might be a life lesson to make sure you hear the thing say - put it in the designated area and to check your receipt - but I’m guessing they know better.
Gotta love the Georgia QB, though (Gunnar Stockton).
This is sports. at least in football, you aren’t going to find every player on the team to be a role model. especially when the team has a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds (which Georgia football has more of than most teams).
UGA shoplifting might be a nothing burger, but the volume of “issues” UGA football players seem to have with law enforcement year after year is kind of sad.
maybe. but it’s almost all the same issue- driving too fast. and when it’s bad- those players are kicked off the team. last year Rara Thomas was kicked off and so was Colbie Young- these were the team’s top 2 receivers and it cost the team in a big way. Colbie Young was able to come back to the team this year because the charges against him were false (and then he broke his leg). Rara plays for Troy now.
and you don’t hear about the good stuff that players do- that’s not newsworthy.
there are a lot of players on the team. many come from troubled backgrounds. Coach Smart tries to mold them into better people- sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m sure this is true of most programs.
