College like UPenn

Hey guys, I just got rejected for Penn and was wondering what schools are like Penn as I really liked the school. I plan on studying engineering. Thank you.

What aspects of Penn do you like best, i.e. seek in other schools? Off the top of my head UMichigan, Cornell, Vanderbilt have similarities to Penn, maybe Duke to some extent too… Stanford is also quite similar to Penn in many ways but given that it is quite harder to get in than Penn and given your Penn rejection, it is probably not a good use of your time applying there.

What about Penn do you like? What can you afford?
Offhand perhaps WashU, URochester, Case Western, GA Tech?

Looking for colleges with great city and research opportuniites

What is your home state?

How much will your parents pay each year for each twin?

Unweighted: 3.58 and Weighted / Weighted Capped: 3.92. ACT: 35. Great EC's.

Your UW GPA may be an issue. Seems like you got a few Bs your junior year.

@mom2collegekids My Unweighted is actually a 3.77 and Weighted is 3.96. I live in NJ. The B’s pulled my UC GPA down.

Ok…

How much will your parents pay EACH year for EACH twin?
You’d get NO AID from a UC as an OOS student.

ideally, around 45k, but cost is not a factor right now

If price is an issue also look at your state flagship, perhaps SUNY Buffalo or SUNY BInghamton (SUNY schools have good OOS rates).

Case Western Reserve - in City and Lots of Research. - Check out a thread here whereby a student give a very in depth description of what its like there.

If you are not adverse to Canada: McGill University and University of Toronto. Great cities and major research universities.

Of course it is. You can’t apply to an unlimited number of schools…and it’s DECEMBER!!!

So, you’re saying that your parents will pay $90k per year for their twins to go to college?

Carnegie Melon, Case Western reserve, northwestern, university of Michigan , university of Wisconsin, Purdue

Penn is one of the largest elite universities and tends to have a pre-professional focus. The closest schools to UPenn in terms of atmosphere and urban location (that I know of) would be Northwestern, Duke, Vanderbilt, WashUStL and Georgetown.

pk1jk1, I must agree with mom2collegekids. You state that your budget is roughly $45k. Like her, I also assume it is per twin (so roughly $90k for both). Even if that is the case, the universities we are recommending all cost roughly $60-$70k per year when you factor in R&B, books, trips home etc…That is significantly higher than your budget. You should have a quick chat with your parents to better understand your budgets. With more clarity, posters on this thread will be able to give you far better advice.

@Alexandre Please do not recommend based on cost as I want to see all my options. When I ran the financial aid calculator for private universities like UPenn and Vanderbilt, it came up to around 35k per kid. Ofc more private universities would be highly appreciated for this reason.

You need to be sensible. You may not get into your current list of schools with your GPA. It is late in the game and you need to add a few realistic and affordable options. You may already have an affordable safety which would be great news. Take a good look at your situation and be objective. Time is running out. Good luck.
