My son is B+ student ( junior)with a 1250 SAT score. We are in NY and are looking for suggestions for schools. He does not want a small school since his high school has 2500 students. He would like a moderate size school somewhere between 4,000-10,000 students located as far north as Massachusetts, as far west as Ohio and as far south as South Carolina. We are looking for some merit aid and probably can contribute 35 K per year. He is not a sports kid so division 1 sports is not important. He plans on majoring in accounting or economics.
Some of the schools that we will explore are Loyola of MD, Dayton, Scranton, College of Charleston, SUNY Colleges, St. Joseph’s and Bentley. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You might also want to consider: Marist in NY (we also liked Siena near Albany but it may be too small for your S) as well as Quinnipiac and Fairfield in CT. Fordham would be a reach but may be worth a visit.
My D will possibly attend Manhattan College which could be a good choice for your son. Susquehanna is in a more rural area but could be of interest. Drexel is in Philadelphia. Babson in Boston would be another option.
My D with similar stats was accepted to Marist this year–the merit scholarship she received brings COA to about $45K (she got an additional $5K award for the Freshman Florence Experience–first year program at their Florence campus, which will bring first year COA to $40K). That’s before taking the loans she is eligible for.
Also, not to argue, but it is highly unlikely to get into Babson with 1250 without sports hook. Bentley will be tough too. Have him retake the SAT and ACT to get closer to mid 1300,s and more options will present themselves.
SUNY New Paltz has great business that he might like and is the right size. Cute town.
Adelphi – right size and has business
Hofstra is close to his target size at 11K students
If he wants to venture a little further north, he might want to look at UVM or U of Maine at Orono. Orono has a flagship matching program so it may be cheaper than UVM, campus is pretty, and has 9K students – so the right size. There’s also am airport there. https://umaine.edu/business/undergraduate-programs/
St. John’s in Queens has an excellent program in business. I can’t tell if 14K students is just at the Queens campus or at its various satellite campuses too. I’ve know people who have graduated from there who have gotten terrific jobs in business.
@mycousinvinny I overlooked you were considering SUNY Schools, sorry. I think they will be the most ocst friendly.
UVM is outside of your desired location but offers decent business degree, good size, merit $ to OOS kids with decent stats, fun college town.
If you are looking tat Bentley because of accounting, consider Bryant too. A bit easier to get into and around 4k kids. Good biz program there.
From our school kids who consider those schools sometimes look at Providence College and Fairfield too, both of them have the scores/stats and size you are looking for with good biz programs. Maybe too expensive unless merit though.
Good luck, your S will be able to find lots of good colleges that meet his requirements!
He would likely get some merit $ at the smaller OH state schools. Youngstown has about 12k students while Shawnee State has ~4k. Bowling Green and Toledo are both ~20K.
UVM and UScranton are good matches. George Washington, Loyola Maryland, Providence College (I think its close to 4000), Elon…so many matches in his range.
@NEPatsGirl , ^ GW If applying test optional, maybe, middle 50 on SAT is 1330-1460 (and average gpa 3.74). Merit aid unlikely with OP’s stats though.
George Mason is more a match but I think bigger than OP wants.
Look at James Madison University. JMU has a quality business program, and though significantly larger than your target, it manages to maintain a smaller campus feel.
One of the major benefits would be the 300+ clubs available on campus that allow OOS students to get involved, meet people, acclimate and settle in.
Your son’s SAT puts him on the cusp of their 75th percentile score from 2017-18, but I’m betting it will be higher for 2018-19 when they post the common data set. JMU is becoming more competitive, as are most colleges/universities. I’d have him study a bit and take the SAT again regardless of the target schools. It could only help.
As for merit aid, JMU is notorious for providing very little aid to OOS applicants. That being said, their OOS tuition and fees for 2018-19 are $38,678, which isn’t far off from your $35,000 target.
Ohio University! Great school, merit aid for OOS kids, and they lock in tuition and fees for all four years. They also are under $40K all in to begin with. Great school for healthcare, tv/film, and more. Check it out!
@NEPatsGirl Elon and Providence will likely not fall in the target price range with these stats. Students will much higher stats did not receive merit aid this year. University of Tampa might be an interesting school to conside but does not meet you location criteria. Many is D19’s friends are considering it because of cost and easy flights from the NE.
