Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Thanks to the great people on this forum who came to the rescue regarding my CSS Profile question. We called and they answered our question. Never again, regardless of health issues, will I let it wait until the last minute.

@rockvillemom - you nailed it - the problem was with the set-up!! Anytime you would like to complete my financial aid forms, you are welcome to do so. I would rather clean toilets - lol.

This college selection/application/financial process is a huge learning experience for me, and I now know that I should start working on my 10th graders future. Oy!

Anyone with seniors that have applied to RIT and/or Northeastern?

My son was accepted to RIT last year. They gave him the Robotics scholarship ($10,000 a year) and that was it for fin aid. My nephew is in his third year there in Computer engineering. He seems always stressed but I don’t know if that’s the college or his personality. He has had problems getting help from his Prof’s. My son thought the campus was too big for him and didn’t think it felt right. I think their co-op program is first rate and well organized. I like how they have a lot of hearing impaired and deaf students. Brings a different feel to the school.

Son was accepted at Wentworth Institute of Technology, which is right next to Northeastern. He got a huge amount of merit aid there but the major did not match up and we got a strong feeling that it was a commuter school. I wasn’t sure if he would have gotten merit aid at Northeastern so he didn’t apply. Another similar school to Northeastern and RIT is Drexel. That was in son’s top three.

Adding my D1 who is currently a freshman at Pitt- the bold feature is annoying because it doesn’t copy and paste- so I changed it to (attending)

Still waiting here for news of more acceptances. All we seem to get in the mail now is glossy catalogs and bills.

My S applied to RIT last week. It’s a safety for him. He’s in an engineering program at his high school that is affiliated with RIT (Project Lead the Way). He will graduate with 9 credits from RIT.

I know this is a big departure from the thread’s intent but just for future reference without getting into detail and hijacking the thread,do any of you have experience with Law School applications. It is just hitting me that as S2 settles into his freshman year S1 will probably be applying to law school. For years his goal has been to become a prosecutor and as he goes into the end of junior year this hasn’t changed.

28 hours till DS2 hears from ED.

So, what better time to start a carb-free diet?! So much for my vodka breakfast and wine dinner, tomorrow. Let’s see how long this lasts…

@spectrum…the answer is yes! If that’s what he wants to do, don’t take out a ton of loan$.

PM me with any questions and where he’s looking.

orangemom, the countdown begins. i know how u r feeling. dark chocolate and deep breathing lasts only a short time!!

I’m going to forego to chocolate and much on … Asparagus?! Sounds so wrong!

Back here after the most amazing weekend. Bar Mitzvah was a huge success. MY S aced his torah portion, and his band rocked the house at the party. A perfect night. Thank you all for the good wishes.

Mumof2, Welcome. My D1 goes to Texas. She loves it. They have a sizable jewish population which is very tight socially. Hillel estimates its population at 4K. There are many OOS jewish kids. MY d sorority is 35-40 Percent OOS. ZBT is half.
Most freshman live in a private dorm called University Towers. While a major party dorm, it is mostly jewish and greek. My d loved it, and made her friends that she hangs with.
The University is great. Large and spirited. The city of Austin is fantastic. Downtown 6th street is the most amazing bar scene and good time. I have traveled to many cities and college campuses, and I believe that you will not find a better city to attend school in. The state capitol is just a few blocks from campus. Only Boston compares for a great college city experience. Austin is smaller.
The academics at Texas are top notch. Business, Engineering and Communication schools are off the charts. I am sure other programs are too. Recently, Texas has increased its efforts to attract a few more OOS students. I understand they have been aggressive in the New York Area. They are also making inroads in So Cal. While my d was the first to attend from our HS, the last few years has yield at least three a year. I would venture to say that if Texas had 10% more OOS students, their rankings would go up. They are getting top quality students attending. Some of my D’s friends chose Texas over Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Berkeley. The weather is great. If you have any other questions, PM me.

Orangemom, good luck in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed.

Lastly, I have been a devoted reader. Seeing the list above made me take notice. I guess we are smaller than I realized. I thought there would have been more on the list. Guess I was oblivious.

Spectrum2: I have some experience with law school applications. First, I have a J.D., my husband is an attorney and D1 applied to law school in 2009, although after one semester she dropped out. She looked ahead to the job prospects and she felt they weren’t great from a lower tiered school. She now works in NYC and is very happy. You can PM me if you have specific questions.

Just remembered some good advice I got around this time last year. For those of you who know where your S or D will be attending, start making travel plans for move-in day. You can make hotel and car reservations at no cost. Plane reservations aren’t free, but you can start checking out prices. If you’re up to it, you can even look at plane flights for Thanksgiving break 2012. ;)
