Vodka and Weight Loss
Alcohol (as in Vodka) contains almost twice the calories of carbs or protein, so in theory, it’s not good for weight control. In practice, however, some research shows that dieters who give up alcohol lose no more weight than those who don’t. Moderate daily drinking (two glasses of wine, or two single measures of spirits for men; one for women) is considered safe and may be beneficial for blood pressure and heart disease. Red wine is considered more beneficial due to its content of the phytochemical, resveratrol. Nevertheless, excessive drinking is associated with increased risk of cancer, hypoglycemia (low levels of blood glucose, caused here by alcohol preventing the liver from releasing glucose into the bloodstream) and may accelerate weight gain, obesity and even the onset of diabetes. Bottom line: if you want to lose weight and stay healthy, keep your intake of alcohol to a sensible minimum.

I love you. I may cry. Best. Post. Ever.

Got that info at [Carbs in Vodka](http://www.carbs-information.com/carbohydrate-alcohol/vodka.htm)

Basically, I think a diet of vodka and celery (for the fiber) would be perfect.

orangemom - good luck to you and your S! I feel your pain. D’s ED school will release this week. I am beyond stressed. She is snarkier (sp?) then usual.

911 - love the drink info.

LINYMOM - loved that article. I really believe that camping does do all of those things and more!

Good luck orangemom!

My son got deferred by UVM; I am not surprised though I don’t know why it took them a month to decide not to make a decision. If they are waiting on senior year grades, well, those are not going to help his cause at all. :frowning:

He did just get accepted by Hartwick (which we never visited) with a surprisingly large merit scholarship. His GPA is low but his SAT scores are respectable, so for kids in that position looking for small schools offering merit scholarships, it might be worth investigating. (I don’t know if there is any kind of Jewish life there, however.)

Simpkin: Congrats on Hartwick and sorry about the UVM deferral.

Mdmom: Hang in there. The last few days waiting for a decision are tough on the whole family. Good luck.

simpkin, there will be more good news coming your S’ way, I’m sure, perhaps even from UVM in the spring. Better than an out and out deny, but it does draaaaaag things out. The odds are good that every one of us here will be in the same boat with at least one of our kids’ acceptances. And having the acceptance from Hartwick is hopefully some balm at this time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint!

For all those worried about alcohol consumption:

When you drink Vodka over ice, it can give you kidney failure,
When you drink Rum over ice, it can give you liver failure,
When you drink whiskey over ice, it can give you heart problems,
When you drink Gin over ice, it can give you brain problems.

Apparently, ice is really bad for you.
Warn all your friends :)

Thanks for the laugh, Linymom!

So sorry to hear the disappointing news, along with the good. It’s bound to happen, to anyone (and everyone!).

It is a marathon. Last year we went all the way through EA, rolling, deferrals, admissions, rejections, AND a waitlist! Be prepared! Sometimes that’s just how it goes.

Love it, LINY!

Simpkin, sorry about the deferral. :frowning: My S also has a deferral from one of his favorites. We’ve moved on to trying to get enthusiastic about the acceptances he does have.

congrats simkim on hartwick

911 happy birthday. a virtual raise of the champagne glass.

it’s 3:01 and feeling orange’s nerves. post soon we are with you

Thanks – It’s okay about UVM; we didn’t have anything invested in that decision. But I think I would prefer an out and out denial to the deferral. It feels strange that he has some decisions now and has to wait months for others. But he seems happy with his acceptances, to the extent he’s showing any interest in this process at all, which is worryingly little.

No go. Surprised, but then again, not so much as first semester grades were crap.

And so we continue.

Phooey! :(

Thats life. Lesson learned.

So Sorry Orangemom. Hang in there. You will set the tone for your son. He will find his school. All the best…

This is brutal and stressful. I feel for all those in the process right now. You hate to wish away the year (because then they will fly the coop), but I know how painful and stressful it is. I was there once before (waiting for that UD decision in late March - ugh) and will be doing it again next year.

Just know I am here on the sidelines cheering for all of you (alcohol jokes and all)!

orangemom, try a liberal application of ice cream or xbox or somesuch to help with the residual pain. Sorry to hear bad news, but there is good news waiting out there.
