Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

So sorry. Forgive the new sexist ignoramus! I’m open to any sage parental advice.

oh socal, you know you are well loved here!

luvmom, this is the greatest most supportive thread, so stick with us on your journey and let us know how we all can help.

luvmom - I just have to give a quick thumbs up to CofC and a thumbs down to Furman and High Point. CofC is very comfortable for Jewish students - as other posters have pointed out. Very nice Jewish population, Jewish organizations, Jewish studies program and so forth.

Furman and High Point - in my opinion - are not great options for a Jewish student. And I’ll leave it at that.

Hey guys…

Engineering for B student? Small…? (got the usual Pa suspects on the list…)

That’s just the kind of advice I’m looking for…thanks, rockvillemom.

Rodney - UMBC, RIT and WPI

Rodney and LuvMom - University of Hartford has an engineering school and a business school - depending on test scores - a B student could get a decent merit scholarship. Large Jewish population in West Hartford and at the college. School is not too large - I think they have a free application.

So, to earn a merit scholarship, a B student should look at colleges where he/she (scores & GPA) would fall in the top 10-25%? The philosophy being, the college wants that student & therefore will be more likely to offer $ to that student? I assume the B student’s EC would also have to be extraordinary, correct?

Thanks, chemusic, for the U Hartford suggestion. Has a 12:1 student:faculty ratio…pretty impressive for a “less expensive” school (they’re all expensive!). Preliminarily, I had considered this school a safety, and hence the above philosophy may apply? Though their endowment is far less than other schools, so maybe not…

During a UHartford visit with S1 four years ago, one of the engineering professors who was giving us a tour asked if S1’s ACT scores were in the higher 20’s (can’t remember the exact number) and then he mentioned if they were, there was a good chance of a merit scholarship. S1 was also 5th in his class but I don’t think that came up in the discussion - just the scores. So if you like the school and the academics, it is probably worth considering as a safety and worth inquiring further as to the requirements for a merit scholarship.

Tx mom24: this student wants a real unversity or LAC …So possibly UMBC but the others are more institutes (his words not mine)…uHartford would be a def safety although he is more B+ with honors math science…need to see what SAT\ACT turns out to be before list is finalized…

Completely on her own, D did her 1st college search yesterday and then (shyly) showed me her results. To my surprise, her top 3 picks: American, Elon, Muhlenberg…She’s thinking big, but at least she’s thinking! (For the future, I’ll try to steer her towards some safety schools, too, but for now, I’m elated that she initiated a search…it’s been a long time coming.) happy mom :)

LuvMom - great choices! I know you are not ready to think about Early Decision - but I just want to tell you that all of those schools have much higher acceptance rates for students who apply ED. Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

Thanks, rkvlmom!

Hey, I was reading the old pages of this thread…Did you ever find out about the campus-wide Christmas service at Susquehanna?

Rodney - DS-1 (HS junior) is also a B+ student looking for engineering (with high test scores) and his two current favorites are University of Rochester and University of Alabama.

Any one here have experience with Alabama? The NMF scholarship, honors housing and Aspergers support program make it look to good to not consider, however it is a jump to imagine my non-athletic, East Coast Jewish son in Alabama. I know they have a decent size Hillel, but was wonderring if anyone has personal experience.

Rodney: Look at Miami of OH. It is highly ranked in engineering. I don’t remember what state you are in, but if you are NOT in NY, then a B student can get into Binghamton (not sure about getting into the Bing engineering school though - but maybe worth a shot). University of Delaware is also rated in some engineering (like chemical, due to Dow $$).

Our GC gave me a copy of the list of engineering schools from Rugg’s. Grouped as most selective, very selective (the very selective are the schools you may be looking at) - she didn’t give me lower levels. The very selective group includes schools like (I will pick some that might be good for Jewish student): Pitt, URI, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, UCF, UConn. I’m happy to fax this to you - if you want to PM me your fax #.

Luv: Re: Univ of Hartford. We visited on a day that didn’t give tours so I pre-arranged with someone from Hillel to show us around. She was from Massachusetts but said that, with the merit money she got at Hartford, it was cheaper for her to go there than UMass. I don’t recall her test scores, but I do remember thinking that they were pretty average. I know kids from our HS who have also received a lot of merit $ there. My neighbor went there for the music program and loved it. (Her brother was a runner and went to American - and he loved that too - pretty sure he got some athletic $$).

Mom24boys, Just read this on page 787 from UCLA77:

"Friend’s son had an absolutely great time at University of Alabama, was part of Hillel there and had many jewish friends.

Their academic life is great, and needless to say, their football team – fantastic (so lots of school spirit too!)."

Like you, just can’t imagine my girl in Alabama!

Liny, Uhartford only a few hrs away, so it’s doable…just doesn’t seem as attractive as other schools, but remains on the list. Thanks!

LuvMom - here is a recent article from the Susquehanna school paper re Christmas:

[The Crusader Online: December 02, 2011 - Christmas traditions inspire holiday cheer](http://www.susqu.edu/crusader/article.cfm?IssueID=223&SectionID=4&ArticleID=9113)

Overall - we were impressed with Susquehanna in terms of campus and facilities and the level of warmth and personal attention. There seemed to be plenty of housing and a reasonable amount of activities on campus. We also felt he would be able to get a merit scholarship as he was above the 75th %. Our concerns were small size, lack of name recognition and small Jewish population. I’m not sure how S2 would have made decisions had he not applied ED to Elon - but my feeling is that he would have chosen JMU or Virginia Tech if Elon had not worked out.

LINY: we are in NJ and I am a Binghamton alumni (and admissions volunteer)…not a bad idea…but may be a little larger than they want…I do like the Miami of Ohio idea

URochester is already on the list, as is Union (which from this kid’s school, an ED admit with a B+ GPA should work)…

Luvmom: when my daughter started her process, those were her top 3 schools…American dropped out after awful visit, Elon and Muhlenberg ended up 1 and 2; she ED’d to Elon…

An Elon visit is in the works for April.

I only have a minute or so at the moment, but I have a sophomore S who will be a B engineering student in two years…

We have many colleges on our list, some may help Rodney? Are you looking for B+ colleges with engineering? If you or your friend is looking at Union, then you also should consider Trinity College in Hartford…LAC with engineering like Union. It has it’s own Hillel building! Also, Northeastern, Drexel, Lafayette, Bucknell, and many others that have already been mentioned, like RIT…UHartford, RPI, WPI, Stevens Institute of Technology, Wentworth Institute of Technology, UVM???, UMASS (althought that is a BIG school), Binghamton, What about Western New England College? Maybe a safety for a B+ student…UDel, UCONN, Syracuse…SUNY Alfred??? Don’t know anything about that one…URochester may be a reach, not sure…nice campus, though! But will be coooooold! Same with RIT.

Good luck! :)
