LuvMom - the more things change - the more they stay the same. That’s what popped into my head when I read the article you posted about the Lafayette student who died this past weekend after excessive drinking. Same thing happened when I was there as a freshman - 30 years ago. Not isolated to Lafayette, of course, but what a waste.

New Chabad House is dedicated:

The article mentions a legal battle with the City of Hartford a few times - but does not explain the issue - anyone?

Hmmm…apparently a “zoning” issue:

ccc is correct about S graduating from college in 2015, but there’s another c43 sib who graduates hs in 2015, too! c43 D stays on the list!!

Luvmom- Thanks for compiling that list! It’s great to see a nice size of parents of '13ers! Here’s to non-competitive support and cheerleading for ALL of our kiddos. :-)

Re:alcohol- It’s a scary thing. I know that we all drank our tails off in college, especially the first couple of years. I have been very open in talking to my kids about my experiences and hopefully helping them make better choices. I’m not even saying NOT to drink b/c I think that is unlikely but to do attempt to do so responsibly. Even more, talking to my daughter about NOT letting anyone else get her a drink and NOT putting that cup down, ever. Even taking it to the bathroom with her.

Queen’sMom- That blows my mind too. While I started thinking about colleges in my D’s freshman year (esp since she’s my first!), I really think 8th graders shouldn’t really have college on their radar much yet, except maybe in planning a track of classes. If the current trend continues, I can see these poor kids feeling intense pressure even earlier than they already are. At some point they should be allowed to focus on enjoying the present!

Welcome @newfaith! Just on in, the water’s fine!

@mom24boys- I’m relieved to see that someone will be doing this longer than I will be! And with twins- Oooh boy. You go!

On our end, the stress of last week seems to have passed, thank Heavens, and she is moving on to focusing on the AP test on Friday, as well as a project or two. Much more manageable! It is so lovely to have the SAT behind her that I could cry! But now, the “prama” is building as Prom is only a week and a half away. I’ll have about 14 teens over here so I’m starting to try to plan some food options and where we’ll have them gather for pictures.

Can you believe the 13’ers are going to be seniors soon? About four weeks left for my girl, and then I’ll have a 12th grader, an 8th grader and a 5th grader! The year after that is the big one for us, transitions all around: One will be starting college, one will be starting high school and one will be starting middle school. ACK!!

vandygrad87 I’m completely with you on the responsible drinking AND the never putting down your cup at a party which I preach endlessly to my daughter in college.

So you have the prama on your end, too? It’s been ridiculously insane here. The over-the-top prom invitations to the jockeying of who is going in whose limo. Almost ready for it all to be over! Except I am sooooo not ready for “my baby” to be a senior!!

Sounds like many of us are in agreement - I have reiterated the “never putting cup down” rule, and I don’t expect zero drinking, as I aim to be realistic. I say - if you put it down - don’t pick it up again!

On another note, please excuse my ignorance - while I know where to find information regarding SAT scores “expected” by colleges, can someone please guide me regarding where to find SAT subject scores expected? I’m sure I’m missing it - probably somewhere obvious??

Thank you and congrats to the grads of 2012 - enjoy this time!

rvm, Yes, 30+ years ago, I lost a (hs) friend, 1 month into our freshman year in college, who, while drunk, fell down a flight of stairs & broke his neck. It happens and it is a huge waste. It happens every year, many times a year, across the country, & no college is immune. It’s a heartache & it’s preventable. Good to know, vandygrad, jaynebe & rnr, that you talk to your kids in detail & often. rnr, “don’t pick it up again!”-good one!

Our HS does not permit limos, gowns or tuxedos at the Jr prom. They must save those luxuries (and $) for the Senior Prom. My D is going to the Junior Prom with a friend, a girl, since the boyfriend dumped her. I’m glad she’s keeping her head up!

Fourkidsmom, holy cow! While my better side says, after 4 kids you’ve earned your rest, my selfish side says, stick around, we need you!

Thanks for Shouting Out on the lists, All. I’m sure there are more of us out there.
Posters, come clean!
Lurkers, come out of the closet.

rossnrachel, you can find info on test scores on college websites, generally in a section titled something like “Facts and Figures” or “About” or “Student Profile”. Or, you can search for the college’s Common Data Set (CDS). Or, look at a recent print guidebook, or the USNWR website.

Keep in mind that the the test scores for “accepted” students is going to be different than for matriculating students. The “accepted” student scores are higher. That’s because the students at the top of the admitted class for School X often choose to attend a different college. So, if you’re looking at School X and they say that the SATs for their Class of 2016 are such and such, remember that the average for the admitted students was probably a little higher.

If the school is “test optional”, then don’t panic when you see how high their scores are.

And when a school gives a breakdown, with a midrange score for each part of the SAT, don’t just add up the subscores and use that as the total for what’s “typical” for the school. Many kids will do much better on one section than another, and that’s going to skew the totals, too.

lol ccc: it only feels like I have more than three…

Just to set a little perspective: an Israeli friend just posted pictures of her youngest child’s swearing-in ceremony. Wow…

Yes - that certainly does give perspective to college angst. My older son had a friend in hs here - who had dual Israeli/US citizenship - and after he graduated hs - he returned to Israel to do his military service.

My Jewish D is considering University of San Diego and Santa Clara. She is reformed/non-observant but belongs to a Jewish youth group & is spending this summer in Israel. Any folks have experience with these Christian schools?

pushydad, no direct experience but from my less-than-a-year-old notes I have about USD “Hillel says jewish population of 100. Hillel of San Diego. Shabbat dinners once a semester.” For Santa Clara, “About 200 Jews (Hillel website says 100), not very diverse, 70% catholic but accomodating. Hillel of Silicon Valley for San Jose State, SCU, and others. Jewish Student Union” Things may have changed in the last year, of course.

I’d suggest contacting the Hillels and asking about how many students they get from USD and SCU, how far they are from the campuses, etc etc.
