I am back after promising not to. I suggested that the OP attend SUNY Buffalo or Binghamton because those schools have her engineering major. She can live with several roommates in inexpensive off campus housing, work as many hours as possible, and attend school part time. This will be very very difficult … but possibly doable. I believe that if she attends part time (50%?) she can still take out the Stafford loans, which will pay her tuition. She can also live at home and attend a SUNY school either full time or part time.
The OP rejected both ideas because she wants to attend a school like Michigan, UNC, Wisconsin, Boston U, etc. The student can’t take out loans by herself other than the Stafford loans. If her parents agree to cosign the loans, it is possible that they won’t qualify for all four years. They may get some FA to UNC ( getting in will be another issue), but the other schools will not give her money. And she would still need to pay her EFC at UNC.
It is possible that the OP may qualify for some merit at Ohio State ( it’s not guaranteed) but even if she gets the Buckeye Scholarship for $12,000… the school will still be in the high 20’s. And… I am not sure if her class rank and ACT are high enough (28?). She really needs full tuition and needs to look way way down the selectivity list.
Again, I wish her well.
