UC Santa Cruz also has great ocean views and is a short bus ride to the beach and boardwalk (and surfing!)
True, but they play matches on the campus sand courts, not at the beach (similar to most of the 100+ schools with beach volleyball teams.)
I grew up in New England -and explained the water was not swimmable a good chunk of the year (and the beaches are often rocky haha). I think she just desperately wants to live near the water. She was born in Alaska -but then ended up in landlocked states of Wyoming and Kansas for most of her life. So -she’s like GET ME TO THE COAST. She’s happy with Canada coast - so cold beaches aren’t an issue. It’s more just ‘NOT LANDLOCKED’.
ETA: However, we did just watch Barbie -and I asked her if she wanted her job to be “Beach”.
These will work - she can drive to the beach!
YES - she said ‘what about that one’ - -and I showed her the map and she was like “That’s not on the Pacific” – I then explained they meant Pacific coast not Pacific Ocean. Haha
Totally get it. I also grew up in New England (and we swam in June- in places like Gloucester, Rockport, Marblehead-- rocky AND freezing cold) and my years in a landlocked city in the midwest made me very itchy come summer time!
I grew up in CT — went to UCONN. We spent the summers climbing around the tide pools. IT was fun. (UCONN is not on the beach for anyone wondering -but close enough to get there).
UPDATE: Beach means within an hour or two drive.
Also (since it isn’t clear from the top post): We are looking for places with VERY generous aid - so she can save her funds for graduate school. It’s pretty much a goldielocks scenario but I think there are some viable options presented. Some of it will simply be luck in combination with strong essays. I know the top scholarships are very competitive. I’m hoping to find a good school experience where her stats are strong (3.85 unweighted, 4.45 weighted, 2 years of independent research/poster win at conference (one so far- more competitions in the future), 200-300 hours volunteering and leadership.
I feel like that should be really strong for mid-level schools?
So, this isn’t a general thread about colleges on or near beaches?
I thought it was, and that this might help other posters.
College of Charleston Honors College. Folly Beach is about 15 minutes from the school.
Some one was kind enough to clip and paste from my other thread -but didn’t grab the finance piece of the question (which hey not a big deal - it was nice of them to start a thread!)
ETA: Our original list is more competitive/ more ‘small liberal arts’ schools -but she said if she could get a very generous aid package from a mid-level school that would be the smart option. The only criteria was ‘near the beach’ -which really meant coastal (an hour or two from the beach is fine).
I think this is a strong contender. The calculator doesn’t look great -but I THINK she has strong stats and MAYBE could get some good merit aid. I hear applying early to this one is crucial
Because I think they meant to start a broader, general interest thread on this topic, and not one specific to your situation (for which you already have a chance me thread).
I’ll defer to the OP of this thread (@ucbalumnus) regarding their intent.
If this thread was meant to be replies only for the specific user mentioned in the OP, please refer to their thread: Refining the list -and looking for some mid-sized schools to add [3.85 GPA, <$30k, possibly biology or communication disorders / speech language pathology]
Ah - yes, I am sure you are right!
Intention was to separate the beach discussion from the chance/match thread which had several other criteria/constraints specific to the student (cost, major, etc.).
Ah yes - I know this now! Oops - but hey this is a good list!
University of Rhode Island is near a beach and many upper class (meaning jrs/srs, not rich kids:) students live in the neighboring beachtown (narraganset). Houses are summer rentals/ student housing!
I know someone whose kid is on a club (?) surfing team.
UNH is only about 30 minutes from beaches too…(and less than that to water)
and technically there are beaches in Boston - can get to some on public transit…
Stony Brook University is near several beaches on the north shore of Long Island. Actually, most Long Island colleges (Hofstra, Adelphi, Molloy, etc.) wouldn’t be too far if driving is ok.
