College's Parent/Family Weekend Activities

For those of you who go to your kid’s Family Weekend, what type of events or activities does the college offer?

At Wake Forest the main events are: Friday night concert/entertainer; Saturday football game; Sunday brunch. Next year, as a senior, D will have a car for the first time, but previous Parents Weekends have included several excursions to Target & other stores.

Swarthmore has the Crum Regatta, where students race home made “boats” down the Crum Creek. Plus there are usually a selection of faculty talks, info sessions on various programs like study abroad, and concerts and drama productions in the evening. In addition, there are usually a selection of mens and womens athletic events on the Saturday afternoon.

FSU has faculty talks, game day, music or dance events. There is a 5K run, sorority dinners, department open houses. But the must-see (at least once) is the FSU student circus. FSU has its own “two ring big top”, and the student circus performs every year on multiple occasions, but especially for parents weekend. It’s fun, and amazing.

Opportunity to sit in on ‘classes’, special topic sessions. Picnic lunch with some games.

The most valuable part of the day was seeing how comfortable S was with his new friends, and hearing them talk about their course work and activities.
