Colleges Similiar to Michigan State University?

Looking for colleges similiar to msu in campus, academics, selectivity, and social life.

Thanks

OSU Minnesota IU Pitt

I would also add University of Iowa.

I think Pitt is noticeably stronger academically

noticeably stronger academically isnt bad

Eh I didn’t really want to say significantly but it’s close to that I think

From best to worst I’d say:

Pitt
IU
Minnesota
OSU
MSU

There being a decent dropoff between Pitt and IU

How is Pitt better than any of the other schools? They all have similar resources, they are all of similar size, they have similar quality programs and departments. I see no evidence that somehow makes Pitt better than the other schools.

Is MSU a good school, it has been #1 choice because I love the atmosphere plus instate tuition, but is it subpar academically or fairly solid just not the best?

Well they’re roughly similar, with one university being better than the other in certain academic fields (i.e. IU has Kelley). So it’s kinda hard to rank them imo.

plan to major in evironmental biology/zoology or policy or microbiology

I think MSU is very underrated when it comes to their academics. You can either do really well and thrive, or you can skate by and still do decently, but you get out of it what you put in.

I don’t know for sure about your major though, wish I could help more.

As far as academics are concerned, MSU is one of the best in supply chain management (#1 in the nation), veterinary medicine, and many other decent programs. I personally wouldn’t consider MSU academics to be subpar. It’s solid indeed.

Take any Big Ten school and you’ll get a similar experience to MSU. The only exceptions being Northwestern (Private), Minnesota (big city), Ohio State (big city).

Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Penn State, Iowa all give you that Big Ten college feel, in a college town. Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois are a bit higher than the others in admissions/selectivity.

Yes Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, MSU, OSU, Minnesota, Pitt, IU are similar in terms of academics & selectivity. Purdue would be the most well-rounded institution among them all I think.

MSU is a good choice if you can’t get into U of Michigan. I don’t really see the point of going to one of the other Big Ten public schools if you’re getting in-state tuition at MSU.

Michigan State University subpar? What nonsense! Exert some effort and investigate the MSU Lyman Briggs School for Natural Sciences, for example.

I’d add schools like Georgia, Kansas, UC Boulder, Florida, and U Washington.

Washington is probably a notch above MSU in terms of selectivity, academics and both national & international prestige.

Yes, but it’s not any harder to get into. Acceptance rate was around 70% and average SAT below 1200. I think MSU is comparable.

barrons, I partly disagree with you, the acceptance rate was indeed around 70% but the average SAT is not that low (1251 the last time I checked). Washington faculty is also one of the best among its public peers (top 5).
