Colleges that want to diversify campus but have a low South-East Asian Population

Please share what you know

Is there such a place? ;)

I don’t think there is. But close to it would be University of Cincinnati and other 2nd and 3rd tier LACs.

South Asians are everywhere!

just about every small liberal arts college

^ examples? You will be surprised to still find considerable amount of Indians, pakistanis and bangladeshi at most of the small LACs

bates, colby, trinity, connecticut college, colgate, hamilton, middlebury, oberlin, kenyon, richmond, holy cross, washington&lee, davidson, skidmore, union, vassar, and on and on.

^ Most of the places except union and holy cross have significant asian presence.

Southeast Asia is the topic here… not south Asia.

[Southeast Asia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Southeast Asia - Wikipedia)
“Southeast Asia consists of two geographic regions: the Asian mainland, and island arcs and archipelagoes to the east and southeast. The mainland section consists of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam; the population of which are primarily Tai peoples and Austroasiatic peoples; the dominant religion is Buddhism, followed by Islam. The maritime section consists of Brunei, East Timor,[1] Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. Austronesian peoples predominate in this region; the dominant religion is Islam, followed by Christianity.”

What about the Minnesota schools–St. Olaf, Macalester, Carleton?

not really astronaut, especially compared to universities. those schools that i listed all have very small percentage of south asians.

Are you sure about Vassar, huskem55? I’d say there’s a lot of southeastern Asian students studying here, based on those that I’ve met thus far.

reed college, portland, oregon. this school has very strong science programs but lack asian students, who tend to be good at science.

10% of Reed students self-identify as Asian; see [REED COLLEGE DETAILED ENROLLMENT](Detailed Enrollment - Institutional Research - Reed College).

Just look at the ethnic breakdowns of the colleges in a source like USNews and World Report, the book or the web site (have to pay). THere are many schools with a dearth of international students and/or those who are Asian.

You guys are muddling south asia and southeast asia up… 99.99% of schools have plenty of south asian students (indians, pakistanis, bangladeshis)… not so for south EAST asian students… most south east asians in the US are singaporeans, malaysians, and indonesians anyway…

vossron, the data you quoted are for Asian Americans… there cant be 10% of international students at reed, let alone 10% of international asian students

huskem is right and posters should look at the actual data; for example Washington and Lee and Davidson both have less than 2% asians(of any type) in their student bodies. Many of the other small LAC’s are similar. I guess they are not among the “99.99% that have plenty of Indians, pakistanis and balgladeshis” among their student bodies.

^ Getting into Davidson is not easy. And asians tend to look at Davidson for safety. If the applicant is really good I dont see him applying to davidson. So those who DO apply are good enough to get in and are not admitted because they are from a specific country.

“And asians tend to look at Davidson for safety”, Oh, pleaaaase, what a ridiculous statement.
“So those who DO apply are good enough to get in and are not admitted because they are from a specific country”-even more ridiculous then the first.

MY point was that there are many colleges with low asian enrollment-in contradiction to the earlier statements made to the contrary. Huskem was trying to point that out. This was what the OP was asking in the first place.

Astronaut, I don’t understand what did you say by those who apply are good enough to get in and consider Davidson as a safety and then they end up getting rejected because they come from a specific country… that’s the case for EVERY college… if you come from China, you’re prepared to face off with the Chinese, if you’re from India you need to beat your fellow Indians to get in… if you’re from Madagascar of course you’re more likely to get in…
