Coloring and cut-and-paste in high school

I’m a parent but I’m interested in high schoolers’ feedback. On a teaching forum I frequent a teacher posted this in response to a post about teachers not being allowed to have kindergarteners color. What do you think?

We color and cut-n-paste at the H.S. level. You can adapt lessons to do so.

For example: When teaching about solving equations, I might have one page of answers and one page of equations. They might cut out the answers and paste them on the equation. Another example is when we learned about order of operations. They had to do a bunch of problems and then follow the “color by number” instructions to color a picture. My high school students love and appreciate these types of learning activities, so I am appalled that teachers are not “allowed” to do them at the primary school level.

It doesn’t happen in my college prep math classes. I’m can find other lessons that provide the kids with a change of pace but seem more age appropriate. My kids would be annoyed to do an assignment they felt was merely busy work.

Primary grades are another matter.
