@1984ad Maybe it was only schools who had more than one applicant? That, or our GCs just don’t feel the need to tell us lol
Do you guys have any books that you love?
@linhcinders if you didn’t match in the first QB round, i think it will be even more difficult to match in the ED round among students who did not do questbridge (therefore, on average, they have higher scores, GPAs, etc). but dont give up hope!! acceptance is just within reach for all of us :))
@mysticmangoqueen its definitely possible since im the only applicant from my school, but i think others have also been the only applicant and still received the letter, oddly enough. i doubt my counselor is withholding info from me, though; we have a good relationship and she told me she would notify me if she learned anything new
@linhcinders i love 1984 by George Orwell, as you can tell from my username :)) i also really like More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera, Catcher in the Rye, etc.
@mysticmangoqueen I am the only student applying to Columbia from my school and my GC received a letter.
@linhcinders The Wind’s Twelve Quarters! I usually prefer to read something about history and politics, but Le Guin’s short stories were really drawing me in. I especially loved The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.
@1984ad my whole school was required to read 1984 before summer break. I already read it a few years ago, but it has remained one of the most influential books I have ever read for me!
@meifangie i wish my school was required to read it! i’ve always wanted to have class discussions and stuff about it because i think the plot is amazing and Orwell’s writing packs such an amazing punch, but unfortunately it’s never been part of our english curricula :(( im glad you like it though!
To those of you who’s counselors received letters, what region are you from?
@1984ad I am very lucky because once every three months our school has required readings that we discuss together. Thanks to that, we got to read writings such as Eichmann in Jerusalem, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave or Homer’s Odyssey.
@Xplant I am from outside of the US (Europe) and my GC received one
Europe too @Xplant
@englishboiii @Meifangie could it be that you are a day ahead of us and that’s why the date is Dec 14th? or did it specify Eastern Time for the U.S.?
Any Columbia Engineering Experience (CE^2) attendees here that applied ED?
if it releases 6PM EST and Europe gets it on Dec 14, wouldnt it be past midnight aka a day ahead for them? So America might possibly receive it Dec 13?
The release time is the same for all applicants. Applicants outside of the Eastern Time Zone need to adjust accordingly. In the recent past, the time was 6 p.m. EST, but, of course, that does not mean that’s what it will be this year.
@1984ad Nice catch. Slammed with projects and tests this week–brain is slightly scrambled. Thanks to the Super Moderator @skieurope for the shedding light on the matter.
My counselor got the letter ,and although I am from Spain, I attend high school in MN. Again it said Dec 14th, but no time was specified.
@Xplant my counselor received the letter and I’m from Washington state
Just curious but does anyone know if having multiple applicants from the same school has any impact on one’s chance?
@skieurope Yes, the release time happens at the exact same instant like you said, but what about people who live in different countries where the time difference changes the date? Some internationals received the letter that says Dec 14 and others who received it are from the US, so isn’t it impossible for everyone to receive decisions on the exact same day? People in Europe/Africa/Asia/etc will technically get the decision on Dec 15 if Americans get it on Dec 14, so I think it’s kinda odd that the time isn’t specified in the letters
Hi! I would like to have someone evaluate my chances, so I am, if you guys don’t mind, note my strengths and weaknesses, and if any of you can give me an idea on how likely am I to get in, it would be appreciated.
GPA: 3.96 Unweighted, >4.5 Weighted
Class Rank 1# (Weighted)
ACT: 29 (Yeah, my biggest weakness. My STEM subscore is 33 and English is not my first language, so that is why)
TOEFL: 104 (I think that waives my weak scores in the ACT, but I am not sure if I am right)
Essays: The quality of the writing was probably not the best, but the content was meaningful and strong in my opinion.
EC: Captain and MVP in 3 sports. Leader in Robotics, Model UN, Math Team & Global Challenge Club. I did another two sports in 9th and 10th grade. Played guitar in a band. Lead technical support in Drama Club.
Recommendations: I submitted 3. Two of them are strong, one of them is just average.
Community Service: + 300hrs (Founded two nonprofit organizations)
ExtraInfo: I have been a speaker at a TEDx Talk and main organizer at another one. I have done two international talks; One of them in the European Parliament. Fluently able to speak 4 languages, little conversation level in other 2. Founded a game development company.
Will my ACT score impact a lot? I am really confident about the other stuff in my application, but I am panicking a lot about my score.
ugh I’m so annoyed right now because I called admissions two days ago and they said “a couple of days” and it’s been a couple of days and no email
on another note, is anyone applying to barnard if deferred/ rejected?
