Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

I just got my letter today, since I was on vacation during the time they were mailing the letters. And I got in! I’m kind of surprised though, since I honestly felt like I bombed the science portion of the test. But I think I got nearly perfect on the easy math, and answered 11/20 challenge questions (but I have no idea how many I actually got right). I am a rising sophomore from NJ.

But I have a quick question: does anyone have any idea how many classes we can actually miss each semester? Because I know already that I will need to miss a few to take SAT subject tests. Thanks :)

I believe its three unexcused absences… don’t remember exactly where I heard that from though…

it’s 2 unexcused absences or 4 excused absences

What would be considered an excused absence? For example, do you need a doctor’s note for an illness like just cold and fever?

Also, are you allowed to defer a semester/year in the middle?

excused absences are like doctor’s note, sat, psat, or school activity.
I don’t think you are allowed to defer, but I’m not sure on that.. Hope this helps!

Hey for the guys who got in, I have a question. Did u guys get something in your envelopes with something about $100 in it?

what do you mean? the optional donation?

We got donation requests…

Sent from my Transformer TF101 using CC

hey all,

for people who already took shp before, can i get some reviews on the calculus in the complex plane, number theory, java, solid state physics and engineering, and quantum theory and its applications. im not sure if these are the classes thy will have this year but if they are these are the ones im interested in.

thank you for your time :)

^ Just to add to that list, if anyone who has taken groups and symmetry or topics in topology, would mind giving their opinion, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How prestigious is it to make it to Columbia SHP? Does it increase your chance of getting into Columbia? Any comments, anyone??

no one’s said anything for a while… BUMP.

Has anyone taken the course “EXPERIMENTS IN GENETICS AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY”? can i get some info on it? what types of labs are there and how advanced is the material?

did you guys get course selection sheets?

have Not yet..

my son is going and he is rising sophomore. how people get there from nj? car or train? anyone interested in carpool and we live in central nj near bridgewater?

I live pretty nearby to Bridgewater too, but I’m taking the train there.

Ive heard that columbia itself organizes a carpool for the atendees

Compared to the way I checked this thread every few minutes before my letter came in, I really haven’t visited it in a long time :)

Anyway, can I get a word on what the classes are like? Any important things that I and other attendees would benefit from knowing, things like- professors that don’t teach well? Courses that are really good (thorough and engaging)? Any red flags (courses to avoid, like a friend of mine derided Psych because of the prof teaching it)? And any courses that we ought to take?

I hope past SHPers give us summaries of different courses. I really don’t wanna rush and make a bad decision when course lists come out (whenever that happens -_- )
And what happens if too many students want to take a course? I’d like to think they just increase class size or the number of classes, but somehow that sounds too good to be true. If they can’t accommodate our course request, what happens?

Sheesh, I typed in a lot of questions…

Lol, it was getting very lonely… I second the request for any previous participants to help out. Also I know a friends last year that didn’t get the choice she picked BC the class was full. Its first come first serve.
