Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Haha, central NJ. I went to the post office anyway to see if it was there. :)

^ haha you actually went to the post office? You must have been really anxious…

DARN, I GOT NOTHING. It’s been 10 days after the date they gave us! Do you guys think I should call the COL-SHP Office and ask ‘What the heck?’, or wait until Monday the 23rd to burst out my frustration?
I know that I have less than 1 percent chance of getting in, but the way they do this is still very distressing.
And I live in Westchester, New York.

@daphneloveschem: I would say, wait till Monday. the acceptances are being sent out later and so you have more than a 1% chance of getting in!

Relax and enjoy your weekend.

Daughter got in today, we are excited.

Daphneloveschem - don’t give up hope. My son got accepted, letter received Friday, and we live in Putnam.

My name starts with a W.
Stuyvesant freshman, did not get in.
Im sure i got almost perfect on easy Math, around 50 percent on science(if you count the guessing penalty)
18/20 on challenge Math section. GG

I found out that I got in today (last name begins with H, live in North Jersey)
I’m extremely surprised because I only answered 7/20 on challenge math (I can’t claim with certitude to have gotten all 7 correct), but did pretty well on science and simple math.
So this debunks the myth that challenge math makes or breaks admission
Rec, grades and essay were pretty good as far as I know

Same here… my easy math and science were very good, but I totally bombed the challenge… ( only answered 7.. guessed on three of those)

Sent from my Transformer using CC

what grade are you two in?

I’m a rising junior

Our son got in Yesterday, and we live in Queens.
He is rising junior at Stuy with the last name starting with K.
Good luck everyone.

@mathnerd

rising sophomore

Rising Junior,
49-50/50 easy math
70+/75 science
17/20 challenge math, answered all.

Got accepted.

I’m calling them. Still haven’t received the letter.

Is there anyone who HAS NOT received the letter? I just called the office and left a message but God knows when they will return my call.

Congrats to all those who got in! & Hopefully for those who are still awaiting their letter.
For those that have been in the program already, did most of you make the voluntary donation? Just wondering !

Congrats to everyone who got in!!!
So I know some of you may be trying to decide whether you want to do Columbia next year or not (I know my friend is), and I thought it might be helpful to just tell you guys what I told him (feel free to disregard this post)
Classes at CHSP are hard. Like, the professor-rambles-on-for-2-hours-unintelligibly-hard. Or at least it easily feels that way, especially on groggy Saturday mornings. Most people in my classes so far (Particle Physics and Astrophysics, which I have heard are better than a lot of other classes people have taken) sleep through every class, or do homework during class and don’t participate at all. On the other hand, some people pay attention too, and ask a lot of questions. My advice would be to take a class that you genuinely have an interest in, to sit at the front of the classroom so you don’t feel tempted to sleep or do homework, and to ask lots of questions even if they seem stupid. Once you pay attention, the professors really do seem funny and enthusiastic about what they’re teaching.
Anyway, I know a lot of you are genuinely interested in the science part of it. For other people, though, I hopefully give some helpful warning advice to not do CSHP purely just to put it on your college application, unless you are fine with wasting 2 (and maybe up to 4, if you take an hour to commute) hours every saturday morning. I’m sure there are lots of things you could be doing with your time that would also look just as great on your college apps.
Congrats once again to all who got in, and I look forward to seeing you guys next semester!! :)

and @mystical i did make the donation, i dont know about the rest of the people though

@chingstah: I am going to attend because I really want to learn neuroscience. But since you brought up the college application issue, how much of a difference does it make to put down that you went to Columbia SHP. Is it comparable to going to new jersey governor’s school or MIT’s RCI program? Or is it just considered at the level of JHU-CTY summer courses which by BTW, I think is a big rip off.

I do agree that one has to invest a lot of time for this especially if you don’t live in New York City and right now I am not sure if I can even do this for all three years of high school.
@mystical: I think the right thing to do is to donate whatever amount you can and I don’t think they are going to hold it up against you. Many of us worked very hard to get here and so I do feel it is a privilege we should enjoy without guilt, since most of us will be paying for the commute itself. It is $12 to go into NYC, but it is free to enter NJ!
