Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

I am currently in the SHP. When I took the exam last year calculators were not allowed.

@Hawkace - The transcript is due on the 20th. That’s in 4 days.

@Hawkace Hey I remember you from the NJ GSET forum! Also a rising senior, also applying.

Hey @BlackDog1695, Good to see that you are applying as well. Who’s taking it on April 5th?

In room 301, Pupin Hall on April 26. What about everybody else?

I’m taking it the 5th, Room 417 International Affairs

April 26, Room 329, Pupin Hall!

What do they mean when they say that students can take the test even if their recommendations and transcripts aren’t submitted?

@BlackDog1605

The science sections are widely varied. The earth science is very general, but the breadth of the material covered is astounding. Biology, seemed to be the opposite; many of the questions were very specific. Chemistry is happily in the middle. With a solid understanding of the general concepts, you will overall do very well.

Good luck!

@Tman1005 Thanks! That just solved most of my worries about the science section. I still need to freshen up on bio then, since I don’t remember anything from that class.

Room 312 mathematics hall on the 26th!

Does anyone know an approximate acceptance rate?

Last year’s was a little less than 19%, according to my acceptance letter.

I suck at bio. If I can only nail Chem and the math, am I good?

I’m taking it on April 5th in the Mathematics Hall.

@Indiankid96 - Thanks! For some reason, I thought it was higher than that… :o

@Hawace - I’m in the same situation; I’ve never taken physics and I absolutely suck at bio and pretty much forgot everything I learned. I’m taking chemistry right now, though, and dare I say it’s actually pretty intuitive for me? Math has always come pretty naturally to me, too.

Does anyone know what the “easy” math questions are like? (There’s 50 “easy” ones and 20 AMC-level ones, right?)

@catchinginfinity

The easy math section is SAT-Level problems, if not easier. Basic geometry, algebra, interpreting graphs, and statistics all showed up on my test.

@Tman1005 - Alright, thanks! That makes me a little less nervous. (:

@Tman1005 Since you took it before, Do you remember what the bio and earth science questions were based on?

Was it multiple choice? And is it hard?

If I studied from the Barrons bio SAT book, will I be okay for the exam?

For those of you who were wondering I was accepted as a freshman with mediocre grades like 3 As and 3 Bs then As in electives and a meh essay but good recommendations and what I presume was excellent test performance
