Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

@Edwardz SHP said it is around 20%.

I hope there is still people around in this discussion. My son, a sophomore, is thinking of applying. He took intro to Physics in 9th grade, no physics in 10th (right now) and is taking accelerated chemistry, he hasn’t taken any biology yet. Will he be able to tackle the science part questions? What do you think? I don’t know how much physics he still remember and no biology. Any material he can brushed up on? Thank you guys/gals!

I took the test two years ago as a freshman (I’m a junior now). Went in with zero preparation and zero idea of how difficult the test was. I thought the test was pretty easy; for context, I was taking physics honors and precalculus honors then and doing pretty well in those classes, and I did Science Olympiad from 7th grade to the present so I had a pretty strong STEM background. Easy math was like what I learned in 6th/7th grade in Algebra/Geometry. Hard math was like easy-tier AMC questions. Science was difficult (but that was because I was a freshman and didn’t know anything in chem or bio - my school does physics first; there were a lot of questions on earth science which I am good at and really like though).

It’s a misconception to say that everyone who gets in is a genius, because I definitely am not one: I’ve taken the AMC a few times and done terribly on them, and I’m not a super fast learner in STEM. I did awfully mediocre in AP Chem sophomore year. (Not to be egotistic) but I’m definitely not average either, as my stats are quite high (98 weighted, 95 unweighted; 1510 psat; many medals in SciOly).

TLDR; If you/your child is a pretty good student who likes science and math, the test and application process should be ok.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply Juliag18! You are definitely too humble.
Do you have any suggestions as how to brush up on the science part until the entrance exam? He hasn’t taken biology and currently taking chem, so I guess he needs to brush up on physics and earth science. Thanks again!

Hi, so I’m a freshman trying for Columbia this year, and I was wondering how many questions there are in each section

I am also a Freshman taking the test.
Any suggestions on what AMC questions to study (ex. 5-10, 15-20)
Also, what are some of the questions like in the science section?
Are there only 2 sections?

Some things about me:
Taking Bio and AP Psych
Know Honors Algebra 2
3.9 Unweighted GPA
Do you think Ill be able to get in?

I’m a senior now, took the test as a freshman and got in. I was in honors bio and had never taken a physics or chemistry class beyond middle school. I was in geometry and had no knowledge of trig, algebra 2, precalc, etc. I didn’t study. My background was fine for the test, for the most part you have to be a good thinker.

I got in as a freshman as well (currently a sophomore) and I knew Alg 2 and Bio. I failed the science section, but I did pretty well in the challenge math section. If you are a freshman they make it easier for you to get in. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions

Hey I am a junior in high school that is going to take the test this Saturday and I was wondering what is should study for the test.

Anyone else testing tommorrow?

I’m currently attending SHP, but I’d like to wish y’all good luck if you’re taking the exam tomorrow!

Can’t believe this thread has been going on for 11 years… :stuck_out_tongue:

Just got to SHP today and found out that the entrance exam is today, it’s that time of year again

You can find me chilling in Pupin 414

Good luck everybody!

@dhusb45 which class r u taking?

I am a freshman and take honors algebra2 honors physics and took chemistry last summer. I read that getting in as a freshman is tough. If a freshman were to get a score of 45/50 in easy math, 10-12/15 in challenge math, 60-65/75 in the science portions- would that be sufficient to get in? Do people get full scores in the test?

@brainbuilder02 they do not release scores for the test, but those scores have a decent shot of making it in!

How how was the test? I am a freshman and plan to take it too

Thank you @DankMeme2019. Can you share your experience?

@MathZany194 - how wS the test

Hey guys, I just took the test today. It truly isn’t much of a test to study for; however, the easy math and easy science section are, for the most part, regents-like questions and easy questions. The real stump is the challenge math. For my test, I had questions which were quite challenging, and it reminded me of the more difficult questions of AMC (maybe test 10). I reckon you should brush up on number theory and algebra 2, and for the science it is mostly learned through experience with most earth science and biology on the test. I myself am a freshman, and I did struggle with the challenge math. One of my friends got into the program, and he said that he confidently answered 9 questions on the challenge math. I would just say to practice math, and just know general knowledge of the sciences. The challenge math is do-able, but it kind of requires a different point of view to answer. Good luck to those who take the test later
