Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

For absences, I know that you can have two excused absences and two unexcused absences. Would having to take PSAT and SAT count as excused?

I am currently a freshman, and I am gonna apply for the Columbia SHP Program. The only science I covered was Bio (and I am pretty good at earth sci and astro), so can someone just tell me the topics of chemistry and physics I should review. Also, can you tell me some good chem and physics books I could use to study? I take the AMC 10A last year and scored a 126, so is that good enough to answer most of challenge questions.
The only thing I am really worried about rn is the science section because idk any chem or physics.

Hey @edugiver ! They take grade into account (if youre a freshman, they dont expect you to excel at all three science courses). Make sure you know whats going on in your math class, and besides that, just make educated guesses for the chem and physics sections. I didn’t study any extra info at all for the science section, and I got in. As for the math section, its reminiscent of a lot of mathcounts/amc type problems- a score of 126 is well past prepared for the test. I think you have a really high chance of getting in just based off of this info! Good luck!!

Not sure if you got a response already, but yes  they are excused. Just make sure you have a parent email shpattendance saying you had to take the sat

Hey @Micc
I applied freshman year and got in. They do take grade into account, so dont worry about that (if youre a freshamn, they dont expect you to excel in all three sciences) i think what helps as well is experience in math competitions, i know that others have said as well that a lot of the math questions are reminiscent of the more basic amc questions. Besides this, i did not study at all. Dont worry, and Good luck for next year! Really hope your son gets in!

What type of AMC questions are in the test? Is it like the AMC 10 or 12? If it is Amc 10 then is it like the numbers 20-25 ?

Hi, planning on applying for this program this year. I’m a sophomore who has a continuous history of struggling on math tests. I ended up with a B+ in geometry honors and I now have a B in Alg 2 honors. My science grades are significantly better than my math grades, I think I’ll get decent recommendations, and I think ill do okay on the test. Will my math grades screw up my whole application?

what important content you put for essay? any suggestions?

bump what difficulty are the AMC questions, 1-10, 11-20, or 21-25? Also does anyone have any suggestions for the essay?

Hey @edugiver , I am also a freshman and I have about the same level of science understanding, except I take a biomedical science class as well. I didn’t take the AMC so I know I’m not gonna do as well in the math section because I am currently taking honors geometry. I’m worried about the chem and physics part of it too.

@sighcollege I have read from other people that the challenge math section makes or breaks you, and I am nervous because while I did do light studying, I don’t know what exactly to study for, so I hope my efforts have not been in vain.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to study for?

Bump the test is coming up really soon. Does anyone who has take the test have ay tips?

A few tips for those taking the test:

  1. DO NOT answer any questions you are very unsure about. This will only hurt you as penalty points will be deducted for “guessing”
  2. When you are taking the test, manage your time well but don’t rush. I believe from last year I had more than enough time to answer the questions.
  3. Cramming at this point won’t really help. As someone who has taken the test, if you haven’t taken a course in school already, it’s better to just watch a couple crash course videos to brush up on the material rather than spend all nighters trying to figure it out.
I forget if equations for Physics will be given out (I really don’t feel like memorizing them all).
Good luck to everyone taking it, I am sure you all will do amazing and ace the exam!!!

I guess what I’m wondering is are the Physics questions conceptual or mathematical? And I forget what the Bio questions were like.

Hello all I am taking the test on the 7th and I was wonder what the Math portion of the Exam was like. Currently I am taking Al2 H and Chem and Bio and my physics is pretty good. I am very nervous about the math part because im not sure I will do well. I heard it is like the AMC. If so, were the hard math questions like questions 20-25 on the test. Please get back to me.

Quikakaka
Hey I’m taking the exam the 7th too. What hall did you get ? I’m in Havemeyer Hall

I’m taking the test on the 7th… does anyone know if we will be given formulas for any Physics questions???

@ayokay this might be too late, but dont stress too much, i recall only answering like 5 confidently (lol oops), amc and mathcounts questions are great to practice with (only within the first 15 problems)

I’m a sophomore I took the test yesterday, I checked some of my answers and these are what i got in each section.

Basic Math: 48-50/50 (approx)
Science: 55-60/75 (literally knew nothing for this, approx)
Challenge Math: 14/15 (I answered 14 and skipped one, I checked my answers when I got home and all 14 were right)

Can someone tell me my chances of getting in?

How do you check your answers/results? Are they on the website/application?
