Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

@ADITYAEMPIRE I wish I had taken this test before. We had not been informed of this program last year when I was a freshman.

@college3981 Try to get a crude understanding of fossil formations, respiration, carbon and nitrogen cycles, stoichiometry, spontaneous generation, and key scientists like Lamark, Mendel, and Pasteur.

“Professor Chang has nine different language books lined up on a bookshelf: two Arabic, three German, and four Spanish. How many ways are there to arrange the nine books on the shelf keeping the Arabic books together and keeping the Spanish books together?”

This is a random AMC question. Is this the level (crude comparison) that we may see on the SHP exam, or the level of difficulty (for probability questions) something like this:

"When 7 fair standard 6-sided dice are thrown, the probability that the sum of the numbers on the top faces is 10 can be written as n/(6^7) where n is a positive integer. What is n?

Again, its a very vague question, but there’s so much misinformation concerning the level of Challenge Math on the SHP that I am/was unsure what to prepare for.

And does the format of the SHP questions mirror the AMC or is it easier to understand?

By weather patterns, what do you mean? I typed in “weather patterns” and other variations of that on google, and nothing shows up. Do you have any websites that you used?

@college3981 I mean like cold fronts, warm fronts, weather maps, etc.

Hey, I’m also taking the test tmrw in the pupil hall. I’ve barely studied (which I regret now) but which topics for physics and the challenge math section would u recommend to study?

Hey guys. Moments like these make me wonder why I did not study earlier for the test. For those that took the test, were there questions on anatomy and physiology of the human body? What kind of environmental questions were there.

ADITYAEMPIRE, both those probability questions are at the same level.

who else is freaking out about tomorrow? im so screwed im a freshman and i’ve only taken biology

Im literally freaking out right now lol. Im trying to cram everything right now which prolly wont help but im out of options rip ;-;

Does anyone know what the admission rate of the program is? Or at least like which grade the majority of the students are accepted in?

@TEST016 theyre similar yes but one is amc 8 and the other is amc 10

@rogerfederer25 around 10-15%

Freshmen: Huge curve (Entire new class has to be filled)

Sophomore: Curve but significantly less

Juniors: No curve.

@ADITYAEMPIRE aww damn. I wish I applied when I was a freshman.

@papercanoe, cramming probably won’t help, so I’m just going to chill until the test.

man i am so nervous for this, the amc math is hard for me :0

sdfsd i have it today anyone in room 417 international?

So how was the test for you guys?

not bad how many did u answer for the challenge math

I think I did decently. Did not get to finish the first math so I left like 5-7 blank, science was kind of hard I left 11 blank (everything else is right) and challenge math I answered 8 got all of them right.

how did you check? also i did about the same; im so mad i mismanaged my time awfully for the first section and left like 5 blank. science was ok exc i haven’t done physics yet and challenge math was less bad than i thought i answered like 10-11 hopefully all right
