Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Are these dates still accurate, or have they been moved because of covid-19?

Deadline for completed application and fee payment: February 28, 2020.
Personal test admission ticket available online: March 16, 2020.
Deadline for SHP’s receipt of transcripts and online recommendations: March 16, 2020.
Entrance examination dates: Either March 28, 2020 or April 25, 2020.
Notification of admission decisions: available by June 19, 2020.

Out of the three sciences (Bio,chem, physics), which would you say has the most problems?

No, the entrance examinations will be held in late June and July.

I am a junior and never heard about this program before, sadly. I wish I did because then I would’ve had multiple tries to get in. The test wasn’t that bad, so I wish I could’ve had more chances because the next time I would know what to study. Also, I’m pretty sure they give the same test every year to everyone. I say this because I myself was looking at this page and some other forums talking about the exam and many of the questions people had mentioned, I got. But the test would definitely not have been as easy (PSA: it’s not a super easy test, but if you know you’re stuff you should be fine) as it was for me if I was a freshman or sophomore (BUT THIS IS JUST ME, DON’T FREAK OUT if you are a freshman or sophomore). So the test wasn’t bad, but its def not easy, because otherwise I, like everyone else who took it, would get in. Overall, from a scale of 1 through 10 (10 being the hardest) I would have to give this test a 7-8 on difficulty, (but probably less, but then again, I don’t want to be too overconfident). Pretty much, I’m trying to say that you have a chance, even if you think, like me, that there’s a bunch of other smart people out there.

Also, to say the truth you really don’t need to study for this. But if you’re like me, then you will feel compelled to study the things I have listed below, because otherwise you think you will fail. But really, you don’t need to study for this exam. It’s really basic stuff, and if you get good grades you should be fine. Yes there are parts of the exam, from Bio especially (which I haven’t taken since 9th), that I wish I studied before, but I was able to guess the answers because the questions are quite basic.

So this test has 3 sections: EZ Math, Science, Hard Math. Wrong answers are penalized, so don’t answer if you don’t know or can’t cut down the choices.

EZ Math:
This is pretty much SAT level math as others have been saying and super easy. There isn’t anything really that has to do with specific types of math, except who about empty sets.
Also, it would really help you to know your triangle triples, and 30-60-90 ratios.

Science:
Has 2 30 min parts. 1st part has 45 questions, second 30.
Part 1: basic facts; main bio, chem, and physics topics
Part 2: Lab data is given, must apply it/science knowledge to answer questions correctly.

Hard Math:
So everyone’s been saying it’s like the AIME or AMC (which btw I didn’t even know what this stuff was before this forum) but I don’t think that’s true. Ya there are some question’s which I left blank, 5/15 of them to be precise, but all of them are do-able. Many don’t require as much thought as some AMC 10 questions, except for maybe 2-3. Other than that, if you know how to apply knowledge, you should be fine. But like what other’s were saying, I think this really makes or breaks it for you especially since I thought the rest of the test wasn’t as hard as I expected. I say this because I didn’t think the other parts were as hard as I expected, so I think that everyone else thought it was easy and probably did as well as I think I did (which i think is like a solid 70-90) then all of us would be getting in. But only like 15% of applicants get in, so this hard part is really what makes/breaks it. I think for me it probably broke it, but I haven’t lost hope.

Overall, no matter how dumb you think you are, or how many other people who you think can get it, you def have a chance. And you really, really don’t need to study for this. So don’t waste your time trying to study.

I wish I can say more here, but please, please, please, feel free to private message me if you need guidance. And believe me, you won’t regret asking for help.

Biology: Respiration (Aerobic/Anaerobic) and oxygen, theory of spontaneous generation,
Key scientists that worked within biology (don’t go and study every single scientist in bio there ever was, cuz like I said, this is a basic test)
Lamark, Mendel, Pasteur,
Chemistry: Stoichiometry, Equilibrium Constants, g—>moles, Redox identify the OA, acid definition,
Physics: F=ma (Newton’s Second law), KE formula, Coulomb’s law,
Misc?: Electric current, resistance, amps, planetary orbits/motions, antigens,
Graph with cold and hot air, where will lightning strike?

@ata2020 there are no sample tests but refer to the post quoted above for what topics to study. Followed this word for word and basically everything showed up. Maybe it will change this year, but the overall topics are the same.

@sn1124 Last year it was chemistry imo, but there are other science topics other than those three.

@ADITYAEMPIRE - Thanks

Has anyone gotten an email from SHP regarding the poll about what dates they can pick for the exam? The June date is coming up and I still haven’t received anything about the tests.

They just came out. Does anyone know how to login to the interface for the poll?

They did? I haven’t gotten an email yet.

I’m a freshman that applied for the SHP program. Currently, I am taking geometry, and I plan to take trig/algebra 2 next year. What have the previous exams covered in terms of the trig? I don’t exactly know how much in-depth I should study for the trigonometry part.

Does anyone have any examples of the types of hard math problems to study? I heard about studying the cube problem, but can anyone recommend any other ones?

@Hotpockets1202 what is the cube problem?

Can one still apply, or has the deadline passed?

@ata2020 I think the date has passed

hey! i just found this forum the other night and im taking the exam for cshp on the 28th i think. im a freshman at stuyvesant in nyc, but i wasnt in a city school for middle school. i took a basic chem/physics class in 8th (balancing equations, properties of molecules, forces, like super basic crap that i prob dont even remember lmao) and this year i took an honors bio class which i was good at. the only math ive taken is like 8th grade algebra and geometry in 9th. can someone give me some pointers on what to review, because i think ill be fine for science (ill brush up on earth science) but im terrified for the hard math section!!!

Have you guys applied for your test date already? I haven’t even gotten an email yet.

i didn’t get an email

We invite you to join the Columbia SHP CourseWorks site, which we will be using both to administer this year’s online entrance exams and, initially, to allow you to submit your exam date preferences.

In order to log in and register yourself in the SHP CourseWorks site, please follow these instructions:

Go to https://courseworks.columbia.edu/
Click Guest Login
Click Forgot Password (you will use the email address at which you received this message)
Check your email for the password reset message from Canvas
Once the password is reset, go back to the Guest Login page and login with your email address and the password you just selected
The course will be present on your Dashboard in Canvas
Once you are in the CourseWorks system, please read the information on the Home Page and then select the Quizzes tab from the left-side vertical menu. There is a single-question “Quiz” to allow you submit your exam date preferences. The deadline to submit your preferences is 11:59pm on Thu. Jun. 18th.

This was the email most people received, it seems like the preference date poll has passed.

Does anyone know if we get a calculator for the test?

Not sure but it is online and we are taking it from home so if you need it you could I suppose. However, tests like these do not usually have questions that you will actually need a calculator. Also, @Hotpockets1202 what was the cube problem you referred to before?
