Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

@Rachmaninoff23 I’d say that challenge math was the most difficult but it really is a more individual type of thing. Depends on what you’re personally good at.

I totally agree I forgot earth science and I’m bad at chem so that was really annoying. Good luck!

Good luck to everyone who took the test this year. My daughter is a rising freshman and is looking forward to taking the test next year. Do you have any guidance on the challenge math section? What kind of problems are those? Any sample you remember?

Do you guys remember if there was any conic sections on the easy/challenging math? I’m pretty rusty on that. Thanks.

Didn’t even know what a conic section was until just now, so you should be good. It was mostly thinking logically and applying info rather than having to know certain information/topics. Very similar to AMC 8 problems (I didn’t find them requiring as much thought as AMC 10) so doing some of those could benefit and they’re quite fun. IMO, they are right when they say you don’t have to study. I think you will end up wasting a lot of time even for the science section because it is just so general. Good luck!

I would like to add that I think this year’s exam may have been easier. It definitely had fewer questions and you were able to use more time per question. I did not take it prior to this year but reading earlier posts about the exam leads me to believe this. They can see how long it took you so maybe this will be considered in admission? Idk, take everything I say with several grains of salt since it’s just my experience.

I hope they don’t take the time you took into account lmao. If they did, they should have said it in the beginning of the exam so that students would be aware that they should answer questions faster.

Thanks for the reply comradenapoleon! Hopefully I’ll do ok. And yea, I agree with Aplay44, they probs won’t care about your time. If there’s a tie, I think they would look at your transcript/recs before they looked at your time. Just my thoughts tho.

does anyone know when results come out? i took the june test and i might have something that conflicts with it time-wise.

Probably sometime in August since there’s still one more test date

hi guys, i’m new here, an upcoming sophomore/current freshman and i’ll be taking the last July test date…I’ve been doing some AMC 10 practice tests but i suck at them and score around a 60 on every single one of them. I’m assuming that means that i don’t have a good chance right? as well, what “set” of difficult is the challenge section compared to the amc 10 test? like is it as difficult as the last 5 questions or more like from 15-20? thanks in advance!

i’d really appreciate it if someone who took the test could get back to me! thanks!!

does anyone know if we are allowed to use a calculator on the test?

Hey smileyfox! From what I’ve gathered from past logs is that you still have a good chance if you do really well on the easy math and science! This year has a different number of questions, but in the past I would say 49/50 on easy math, 65/75 on science, and 8/15 on challenging math would make you a competitive applicant.

Also, this will be my first time taking it as well, so I can’t be certain. Also, not sure if we’re allowed a calculator - we’ll probably find out when we take it

And I’ve heard the questions are comparable to 1-15 on AMC 10 or possibly easier.

hey blackhole99, thanks so much for getting back to me! haha your comments made me a little blessed stressed, if that’s possible. hopefully we will ace it together!

Yea hopefully everyone in this forum gets in lol. College Confidential kids unite!

In an email sent before my exam, they said you can’t use a calculator. There wasn’t much to calculate so it wouldn’t really help you either way.

Yea I second what blackhole99 said, definitely the easier end of AMC 10

I’m most worried for the science portion. People who have already taken the exam, how would you describe the difficulty? Thanks!
