Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

They sent email earlier today stating that results will come out around Aug 21.

Here’s the email:

"Dear SHP applicants,

I hope this finds you and yours well.

I write with a brief update on the SHP applications and admissions
process for this year. This past weekend we completed the online exams,
spread over several weekends, for approximately 1,800 applicants. We
are now working on admissions, and hope to have completed that process
by Friday August 21st, at which point announcements will be posted
online. Please await further information on how admissions decisions
will be made available. We are no longer accepting any new/updated
information for applications.

In terms of our plans for the new SHP year, much remains in flux - at
Columbia, in NYC, and in NY State. It seems certain that our Fall
semester will necessarily be online. We are moving as quickly as
possible to determine the dates and format of the fall SHP semester.

We thank you for your continued interest in the SHP, and patience with
our ongoing planning."

@jkotl0327 I remember reading somewhere that the people looking at your test can see your activity on the browser while you’re taking the test. Like they’ll see “Answered following questions (#)” and the time you did it. Here’s the link where I read it: https://community.canvaslms.com/thread/32041-cheating-during-canvas-quizzes

Did anyone else not receive the Aug. 21 email?

@jdh2235 Funny, I didn’t get an email.

I received it just recently so maybe the rest of you will get it sometime later today

Yes, I read this too. Some platforms allow you to even see the test taker physically so they definitely could have done a better job.

was the challenge math part easy this time?

Wasn’t too bad honestly it’s probably like AMC 8 level if even I felt like.

I think the science portion’s gonna make or break me because there were some miscellaneous topics that I wasn’t sure about. The range of questions was huge on that section.

@blackhole99 Questions like the photosynthesis to respiration ratio were very weird.

Same for me I had to do a lot of educated guesses for the science portion. The easy math was easy and the hard math was also pretty easy, except for maybe a problem or two that was slightly difficult.

I still doubt that I’ll get in though, considering that a lot of top notch students are applying too.

I wonder if they will consider the essay, transcript, and recommendation more this year because of the online exam

Yea I also feel that the science section is harder and the question range is so big. The hard math this year is ok tho. I hope the transcript and essay will count more this year, but I bet most of the applicants have almost perfect transcript.

ah! i’m super anxious for results ? good luck to everyone here!

I know I’m a bit late here but what do you think my chances are as a freshman with (probably) all the math questions right (easy and challenge) and maybe mid-thirty-something to low fourty-something science questions right.

I think you have a good chance to get in. I would say you probably get in 3/5 times give or take, but this year’s different, so I can’t be sure. Anyways, good luck!

Sorry but what do you think my chances are as a freshman who hasn’t taken chem, physics, or alg 2 yet (idk if they take that into account) but thinks she got…
first math- 38-40/40
science- 45-49/50
hard math- 8-9/10
I think my grades and recommendation will be my biggest strength. My essay was nothing special as I just listed my math and science awards and activities in a coherent way that made it seem not too list-like.
Thanks!

Cdupas0307 I don’t think they take into account what classes you’ve taken yet. I think you also have a good chance of getting in (3/4?). Your science is honestly pretty good considering you haven’t take chem or physics yet, so if freshman actually get a curve, I think you’ll stand out.

Can someone please chance me as well?
I’m a rising sophomore and I’ve only taken AP physics thus far (so I actually studied a bit for science knowing I’d be at a disadvantage). My transcript was good, essay was definitely up to the mark but nothing out of the ordinary, and LoR I’m counting on to be very strong.

Score predictions for exam:

Easy math: 40
Science: mid to high 40s
Challenge math: 10

Would these figures cut it?

Rachmaninoff23, these would probably cut it. Again, your science is impressive considering you’ve only taken physics, so I would say you have about a 4/5 chance. I’m just basing this off of previous years. Anyways good luck everyone!
