Columbia University Transfer Thread Fall 2019

does anyone know last year’s transfer acceptance rate?

I think it was 7%

that’s what I like to hear lol

I got into NYU today and now I’m stressed about waiting the whole month for the ivy decisions

I got an email that informed me about applying for GS studies. What does it mean? Does it mean that my chances for admission of columbia college is very slim but good enough for gs studies?

@SMSNYAL General Studies is for non-traditional students, and the quality is not better or worse than Columbia College. Did you take a gap year for more than two years?

@kcssuu Yes, I have some gap years. Do you think it would be an auto-reject for older candidates? To be honest, I don’t know if I will write another essay …

@SMSNYAL I just wonder why you prefer other colleges in Columbia University than GS. They are all free to take any courses, isn’t it? Or is there any disadvantage about GS that I don’t know? Personally I think it is a previlige if you took a gap year which entitles you to apply to GS.

I just knew about GS department, and that’s why I didn’t apply to it. People say there is no difference between cc and gs, but maybe I will have to make sure before applying till next Wednesday. To be honest I don’t feel previliged but as far as data shows, it will be less competitive for sure.

Did anyone else get a new IDOC form?

Hey guys! I was accepted to NYU last Thursday, and I only have 2 weeks to respond to my offer. If I’m accepted to Columbia I won’t be attending NYU, so I would hate to fill another student’s spot by accepting my offer then withdrawing my enrollment. I emailed Barnard and Georgetown about this situation, asking if it would be possible to receive my decision early, and Georgetown asked me to contact my transfer chair with the question and proof of deadline. Barnard still has not responded to my email, but I called and got the general sense that the decision would not be released early. I am going to try emailing Columbia and will let you all know their response in case anyone else finds themself in a similar situation!

Hello, all. I’m planning on applying to Columbia next fall and want to see where I stand. I started community college roughly 3-4 years ago and struggled because I couldn’t fully commit myself. But, in the Fall I took five classes and was able to get a 3.75 GPA and this semester has been going well too. I was a Biology major when I first registered back in 2015, but last semester, I changed it to a dual-major: Political Science and Communications.

In regards to ECs, since July of 2017, I’ve been writing for a basketball blog based in Europe. I attend 76ers home games on a weekly basis. I’ve done multiple interviews with NBA players and even an exclusive interview last May. I’m hoping to display that the best way I can on my application. For my work experience, I’ve worked as a restaurant manager and I currently work at a bank.

I’m also looking to take summer courses at Rutgers NB this Summer and hopefully joining PTK and my school’s Honors program this Fall. How do you chances will stand by the time I apply?

@taylor99 hey! Congratulations on your acceptance to NYU! I have the same exact issue and i was trying to figure out something. I would be more than happy if you could let us also know when you hear back from Columbia! I also saw on NYU’s website that if we accept NYU’s offer, we have to withdraw all other applications we have pending at other colleges. Do you know if it’s true? If it is, then that means I have to withdraw my Columbia application if I accept NYU which I don’t wanna do.

@“Mary26Flora.” Here’s the thing: how would NYU know we even applied to any other schools, and how would they know we had not withdrawn other apps? If I have to accept before I hear from other schools, I absolutely won’t be withdrawing other apps. That’s just unfair to ask of us!

@taylor99 That’s exactly what I thought! I don’t think they would know that but still I was kind of worried. I won’t withdraw my applications either. I wanna know at least what decision other schools will make on my applications. Thanks for the response!! Please let us know when you hear back from other schools. Best of luck to all of us!!

@“Mary26Flora.” I called the undergrad admissions office at NYU last Thursday to ask for a deposit extension, and they granted me an extension until May 9! Definitely call and ask and I am sure they will grant you an extension. I told them it was for financial reasons, so they were happy to provide the extension.

@taylor99 Hi! What major did you apply for in your Columbia application?

@LACtoUNItransfer I applied as a philosophy major with political science as my second choice! I applied as a philosophy major to the other universities I applied to, as well!

Is Columbia’s 3.5 gpa absolutely set-and-stone and they immediately weed out anyone with a < 3.5? Or they still read files with lower than 3.5?

I have a bad 3.3 college gpa (very rigorous public university), and a 3.84uw high school gpa.
I also got a 1590 sat, 35 act, and two 800’s so if they kill by the 3.5 cutoff that will be very sad…

@grundeis
It’s columbia. I think that even if they didn’t have a official cutoff your chances with a 3.3 or even a 3.5 would be low.
