He’s leaning computer science and/or economics, but he’s keeping an open mind. He’d like a cyber security track.
He’s ADHD and dyslexic, so he wants a supportive accessible student services… he’d even like a mentor to meet with him 1 or 2x/ well. He also doesn’t want a peer pressure heavy drinking atmosphere.
Small classes will also be a real lure for him. He wants his teachers to know him.
So does anyone have any insight to compare these three???
I know of students who attended all 3 of these, so I have heard a little about them.
McDaniel seems to have amazing support for adhd students. My good friends son attended and received amazing support-but that is only one anecdote. The local town is very charming also.
According to my niece currently attending Mount St. Mary’s (in MD) she is not feeling any pressure to partake in drinking, that it is not a ‘heavy drinking’ atmosphere-at least for the freshmen.
All three should have small, supportive classes.
Have you all visited? They are similar campuses in that they are in quiet remote areas, but each has it’s own distinct feel.
McDaniel College is a standout when it comes to serving students with learning differences! It offers an optional (but fantastic) early orientation for students with learning differences called Step Ahead and a wide range of services plus a great sense of community. Schedule an appointment to talk with someone in their SASS office if that will be a decided factor for you. McDaniel College also has a strong economics and business administration program. (Some years, one option for the first year seminar is Freakonomics with Professor Kevin McIntyre, which might be of interest to someone with an interest in Economics.) I’m less clear on whether the Computer Science program is really geared toward cybersecurity, though.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the public honors college, is also an excellent choice, beautiful campus. I would feel very confident in their offerings i both Economics and Computer Science as well, though again, not sure Computer Science is really geared toward cybersecurity.
You really can’t go wrong with any of your choices, but for a student looking for support for learning differences, McDaniel College deserves a serious look!
