Competition level for BA Theater programs

We recently had an admissions panel presentation at our school where the presenter said if you want to get into a competitive school then choosing a less than popular major like “the classics” gives you an advantage.

I’m wondering if being a theater major is in the same category. I’m talking about a BA program at a top tier college/university. These programs usually have few majors in the program. Are there fewer applicants for theater programs at these schools and does it give you “the classics” edge?
