competition?******

if there are 4000 seats in a university and i am applying for engineering degree…do i compete for the 4000 seats or the specified number of seats for engineering degree? and does the selection depend on the degree we apply for?..for example: is it hard to get into an engineering degree than mathematics degree?..any suggestions for engineering applicants? some universities for engineering?

For many universities, gaining admittance to the engineering program is considerably harder than the for other subjects. Math does tend to be slightly easier to get into than engineering (though obviously this depends on the school). You’ll be competing for a spot in engineering, not in the university as a whole, if you apply for engineering.

Some of the best engineering universities are: MIT, Stanford, UMich, Caltech, U of I (urbana champagne), Georgia tech, Carnegie Mellon (more for computer science but still good). As a general rule, state schools tend to be stronger for engineering (although there are obviously exceptions). Harvey Mudd is another good one, more likely to offer aid (public universities will only offer merit based aid to internationals, they will NOT meet financial need so if that’ll be a problem for you, try and look into private schools more).

thank you…any safeties with aid?
