Confused about MCA score

@KES2022 Yes, 9-12 (except math and language which can be 7-12).

Thanks, MelloG!

I cant believe this silly urban legend still has followers. Yield management is alive and well.

What’s the typical MCA score of non engineering majors? Anyone know?

@cocoonutty I haven’t found an MCA breakdown, but Cal Poly does provide admitted student profile numbers by college, GPA, SAT and ACT

Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences 3.90 GPA / 1315 SAT / 28 ACT
Architecture & Environmental Design 3.99 GPA / 1366 SAT / 29 ACT
Business 4.01 GPA / 1390 SAT / 30 ACT
Engineering 4.16 GPA / 1467 SAT / 32 ACT
Liberal Arts 3.95 GPA / 1343 SAT / 29 ACT
Science & Mathematics 4.09 GPA / 1391 SAT / 30 ACT
Total 4.04 GPA / 1391 SAT / 30 ACT

@Coconutty, CP never has released a MCA breakdown that I’ve seen. The best you can do is to search the Final Status threads from 2016 and 2017, and hope they are still calculating the MCA the same way. Good luck.

@eyemgh i’m currently a junior in hs but i calculated my mca score, which is 4818 (4.3 gpa, 1520 sat) is that good for an animal science major, bc i know its very competitive. also, do u know the average mca score or does it vary year to year? thanks!

@highschool3r, the MCA caps GPA at 4.2. You can look back through the final status threads and search for Animal Science. I would guess your MCA would be competitive, even with the recalculation at 4.2. MCA varies by how strong the applicant pool is and how many slots they need to fill, so it varies by year. Good luck.

Do explain your not on “automatic rejection” for <8 semesters of English in context of VPA, ie, must have 2 semesters minimum or automatically rejected, yes?
Related, can VPA be fulfilled via summer college transferable Credit-not for GPA but to mitigate auto rejection?

Yes . Any requirements can be fulfilled with equivalent college classes. Many kids at our high school take art history over the summer at the local c.c.

Are all the engineering scores the same? Looking particularly at industrial engineering.

@crazycrabman, what do you mean? Everyone’s MCA is calculated the same, but each major competes only with itself. IE in general is a fairly easy admit relative to the rest of the CENG, meaning a lower MCA that might not get you into ME, BME or CS, might get you into IE.

@bigfandave. For VPA credit, class must be taken for grade.

@acceptplease

My son got waitlisted and got off eventually
for Economics(2018).

His stats: GPA 4.1(9-11th)
ACT: Math 35, English 27
In state

The school’s target enrollment
number was 50 for Economics
(freshman).

I am so very confused! 3700 is my MCA w/out the classes. I’m not sure how to calculate it WITH classes (I’m assuing it’s around 4100). Since I forgot to include 8th grade classes, it may be a bit lacking :frowning:

I put on my app:
8 semester of math (10 w/ stats)
10 semesters of lab science
8 semesters of english
4 semesters of visual arts
4 semesters of foreign language

What’s the MCA for that section?

@aVeryHappyChild, 750.

@eyemgh I thought the maximum score attainable in the courses section was 750. I definitely don’t have the highest score possible, do I?

@aVeryHappyChild, the max possible is 950, but the algorithm caps out at 750.

@eyemgh I didn’t know to include middle school math courses so I lost out on 250 mca points. If I don’t get in could I appeal with this?

@itscassidilla, sorry, but no. CP explicitly says errors in the application are not grounds for appeal.
