@eyemgh although I now see it listed on cal poly’s website, nowhere on the cal state apply does it mention middle school grades. It is unfortunate because nearly everyone I know did not know to include them so they should really make it more clear. For example, the UC app has a designated spot for middle school courses.
Below are the instructions on the coursework page:
"You must enter high school coursework to verify completion of A-G subject requirements and to allow for an accurate GPA calculation. Enter only approved college-preparatory coursework that is used to fulfill A-G subject requirements.
A-G requirements are a sequence of high school courses that represent the basic level of academic preparation for post-secondary education. Each subject requires a certain number of years of study and a passing grade of C or better. (Any courses that your report for which you have received a D or an F grade will not be included in your Total Years calculation. These courses will still be included in your calculated GPA.)
California high school students may view the college preparatory courses offered at their high school by visiting the University of California Course Management Portal
NOTE: College courses taken concurrently while in High School must be reported on the Transcript Entry Screen for each college attended. Be sure to visit the A-G Matching screen after completing the Transcript Entry page to ensure an accurate GPA calculation and subject area counts."
@itscassidilla, that’s because the CSU application is generic. Each CSU does things a little differently and they each give detailed instructions on how to fill out the application for their specific institutional needs. Linked below is one of the CP set of instructions. Middle school grades are referenced on p. 4. CP is also the only CSU that uses 9th grade marks in the admissions decision. It is sort of silly, since it can be inferred that you took those classes based on your highest math. Sorry that one tripped you up.
@itscassidilla: The Cal State apply does mention Middle school grade entry.
Below I have copied this information from the Cal state apply instructions:
**ENTERING GRADES
i. If you completed courses in 7th or 8th grade to fulfill A-G subject requirements, please select the appropriate grade level, along with your first high school attended in 9th grade and your 9th grade academic year.
b. Select the School that you attended for that grade level
c. Select the appropriate Academic Year
d. Click the green check mark to continue **
@Gumbymom. Hoping you can clarify. For 8th grade math, instructions imply to place it in the 9th grade academic year (15/16) under the high school. This looks odd to to me to have two maths taken in one year. I called state schools admissions and they confirmed that is correct. I documented who I spoke to. When I questioned this they told me not to worry about the term year taken. I just looked at another thread and this is not a new topic, my apologies. I tried to delete this post but can’t figure out how.
@SBmom1989: Last year, the CSU’s redesigned the Cal State apply application and the listing of the Middle school courses and grades was a change from the previous application. The previous application allowed you to list Middle school courses under 8th grade. There was huge confusion last year so SLO did not count the non-reporting of the MS courses and grades against the applicants. The reporting of MS courses/grades on their application can be found in the Cal Poly View Book and Selection Criteria on their website. The instructions are also there on the Cal State Apply entering coursework instructions but not obvious.
Middle School Coursework (if applicable)
Cal Poly will give consideration for coursework taken in 7th and 8th grade for Mathematics and Language Other than English only. The coursework must be entered into the application to receive consideration; it will not be assumed. The courses and grades received should be entered under 9th grade in the High School Coursework section.
@Gumbymom . Thanks again. Should these grades be included on final HS transcript since no middle school transcript exist? High schools will certainly not be happy with these requests but I may insist.
@SBmom1989: SLO does not verification/transcripts from middle school courses and grades, they just want the Math/Foreign Language classes to be listed on the application for course rigor points.
SLO assumes, working from highest HS math course completed, that one has “validated” the lower level Math coursework. All math coursework is reported >Algebra 1. A letter grade is not a required reporting metric. Ditto for international languages.
Trying to figure out what type of college math class would count as advanced math. We contacted Admissions at Cal Poly and the person we talked to indicated that even college Algebra would count as advanced math. However, I am skeptical of this. I would think that it would at least need to be PreCalc. Anybody know for sure?
OK that’s good to know. I guess I’m surprised that basic college Algebra counts as advanced math, when you have to go to at least PreCalc to get an advanced math class in HS.
