Hey there guys, im new around here and just want someone to guide me out of my dilemma.
I got admitted into GIKI this year and so far im doing fine but this idea just happened to pop up in my mind. Basically, my family owns a business (not one of your multinational companies) and I want to know that would it be wise for me if I continue studying engineering here or transfer into another programme which would help me handle the business which would eventually be passed over to me?
As far as interest goes, im not particularly passionate about engineering. In fact, I chose to go with the programme which would hold a better future instead of developing any admiration towards the field. But right now, I want to know which programme would ACTUALLY help secure a better future.
Any help is highly appreciated!
If you want to prepare yourself to run your family’s business, the degree paths that make the most sense are:
- Bachelor of Business Administration, or
- Bachelor of Science in Economics, Accounting, Finance, or Marketing (if Marketing is available...)
For a well rounded education for operating a small business, I recommend taking at least the following courses:
Financial and Managerial Accounting
Corporate Finance
Marketing Management
Microeconomics
Operations Management
Entrepreneurialism
Organizational Behavior
IT Management/MIS
Business Law
In tandem with the experience you will gain by working in your family’s business, you should be able to apply the knowledge gained from these classes to improve and sustain your business.
Hey thanks alot for your advise. Im thinking of getting into BSc Economics at LUMS next year. Would that be a good option?
Sure – BS in Econ will be fine.
Just make sure you take a broad selection of business courses, like those listed in my prior post.
