Hello, I’m currently a freshman at American University in Washington DC. Though this school has a great program for my major (International Relations), as time goes on I’m finding that I might want to be a bit closer to home (central VA) and at a college that is not in such a large city. With that being said, I’m considering transferring to UVA for Fall 2018 but wondering if I will get in. I’m doing very well so far at AU and expecting to get at least a 3.5 GPA for the first semester. In high school, I had a weighed GPA of 4.17 and my SAT score was 1200. I took four AP classes and did loads of volunteering as well as ECs. Here are the classes I’m taking my first semester of freshman year:
SIS-105: World Politics
MATH- 151: Finite Mathematics
ECON-100: Macroeconomics
FREN-122: French, Elementary I
SISU-106: Global & Local HIV Epidemic
Any feedback is appreciated!
college GPA is low and so is the SAT. I would work on good midterm grades and consider retaking the SAT. From the stats on college confidential, Sophomores with less than 3.8< have had a really tough time with acceptances. I would really try to put up a 4.0 for your spring grades. A SAT retake should also be attempted. HS record is good by the way. I’ve heard it becomes less important as you progress further into college (AKA: credits).
DO NOT retake the SAT. There is no need to do that as a prospective transfer student.
Your coursework is looking good. For next semester, try to continue to take care of courses that will keep your current school happy and check off [the transfer credit requirements](http://admission.virginia.edu/transfer/requirements) for the school within UVA that interests you.
College GPAs of 3.4 and better tend to be most competitive, but the coursework is more important. As you can imagine, there are students with higher GPAs and courses that don’t take care of requirements.
Good luck! You may want to read [the UVA transfer blog](http://uvatransferadmission.blogspot.com/). It goes over the most common transfer issues.
Dean J - I’m glad you pop in to set things right.
Transfer students should rely upon official info as much as possible, as linked above.
A former transfer student recommended me to retake the SAT myself actually. I have about a 1350 and he told me to get it into the UVA average which is a 1410
@uvahopeful7222, I’m a dean in the Office of Admission.
@“Dean J” Thank you for your feedback! I just enrolled in classes for second semester last week. I am taking Physical Geology (with lab), Religions of the World, Western Civilizations, Microeconomics, and Public Speaking. Will these courses make me a more competitive applicant? Is there anything that I should change or possibly add?
@“Dean J” I’m interested in the College of Arts and Sciences, by the way.
I know if you’re applying to schools other than comm and education that it is optional to send in your test scores, so what are the chances if you do not send them in?
