We’ve ordered our son six months of the two week contacts and he’s trying out the daily wear ones now. For anyone else that has tried both, what do you use now? Is there a reason to use daily’s instead of the cheaper two week ones? Any place have better prices then Costco?

I believe the ones I used before were actually monthlies, maybe two weeks, it’s been so long I don’t know. It was easier to deal with dailies once I moved into the dorms. I just felt more hygienic being able to take new ones every day, it felt harder to keep them clean at school than at home.

For real estate the rule is location, location, location, for contacts, the rule is: Daily, daily, DAILY!
College students fall asleep in contacts, forget to take them out, clean them improperly or not at all, and are at vastly greater risk for eye infections. A prolonged course of antibiotic treatment -or at worst, a corneal transplant - is far more expensive than daily-wear disposable contacts. While wearing dailies is not a guarantee that the wearer will never develop problems, the rate of complications, infectious and otherwise, is far lower for daily-disposable wearers than for longer-term contact lens wearers.

How expensive are dailies???

Emahee and debski, Thanks for your responses. That does make sense. I think what we may do is have him use the two week ones until he goes to college to save us some money and then just go for the daily’s next fall when he’ll go away. He is really good about personal hygiene though, so I may re-consider depending on what he thinks. A couple of people have told us that they mostly use the two week ones but if they’re going on vacation or doing something really messy, they will use the daily’s. I can see how the busy life of a college student would lend itself to daily wear.

The last three eye doctors I have seen swear by CIBA Night and Day lenses. You wear them for 30 days. The material is the most breathable on the market. I’ve worn them for about 7 years and have not had any problems at all. I usually take them out a couple of times during the month to clean them, but you don’t really have to. I sleep in them almost every night. The less handling of the lenses, the better.

My son had several very bad eye infections that caused some minor permanent damage. The doctor said that daily wears were the only lenses he could wear now. We order them at Costco. My other three kids must be more careful because they wear a pair for two weeks before they change them.

Lord - I thought this was a debate about contacting you children every 2 weeks or daily!

^^^ Oh, in that case, we’re dailies!!! :)

This thread was timely for me because since college my S has had some trouble with his contacts and stinging when he puts them in. He thinks it was a new solution that his eye doctor recommended - I forget which one - he bought new solution, and got out a new pair of contacts and seems to be better today.

I’m still curious how much more expensive dailies are, they would probably be much easier for college life.

I have been wearing contacts for over 30 years now. Been through monthly, two weeks, and now I have dailies. It is “CooperVision Proclear 1 day”. Very happy with it. I ordered it at Costco, it costs a little over $1 per pair. Just need saline solution, and so convenient.

Mom911, Glad you popped up with the price because that’s what I thought the lady at Costco had said but I wasn’t sure. 30 days MOWC? Wow! I’ll ask the optometrist at lenscrafters but I wonder why she didn’t mention them. Would you happen to know how much they cost and can you wear them if you have an astigmatism?

I am in dailies as is my son…what a difference! Nothing to clean and my eyes are less likely to develop minor infections or issues. It is worth the money. We should buy at Costco but in our small town, we get attached to our doctors and their contact lens people and we pay more premium rates by ordering through them. The reason I accept this cost? Lets see, Duke son forgets to order them or to tell us…and our home town office sends him two weeks free they have on hand for instance. Son thinks he has a minor loss of sharp vision and I think he is nuts…the local woman takes him seriously and adjusts his prescription, spends time with him on college breaks in the office with short notice…and helps him trade out unopened boxes…I forgot to reorder my lens…and there was a national shortage for a couple of weeks…my local guys outfitted me in their samples for free.
honestly, in this recession…I could save some money buying at Sams or Costco but it is the little things like service above that help me accept retail pricing on our contacts. If you have a simple easy as pie prescription and no “aging” eyes or complexity…by all means order online…etc.
In my hometown…I don’t even pay at the local grocery store…I just say “charge it” and walk out and someone sends me a bill once a month…we are like some Norman Rockwell throwback community. This is good in a pinch…your pharmacist is never a stranger for instance either…but sometimes I miss being anonymous and it can be a pain to “know everyone” and be known everywhere. I just fed the man who does our mowing a snack and we had our monthly half hour visit. Sometimes, I just have to hide! Mayberry can be wonderful or claustrophobic. I have a hard time even considering changing where I get my hair cut as I don’t want to hurt her feelings and my OBGYN lives three doors away. He is always dropping by if I happen to be outside or getting my mail etc as he takes a walk and I just have to close my eyes and think of England. If you no longer frequent a store…people take it personally. Intimacy or privacy…it took me a long time to realize when we moved here that proximity to others is just way closer than in my past lives.

My son uses Dailies and our last order was from lens dot com. DH ordered a year’s supply for about $300.

[AIR OPTIX NIGHT & DAY AQUA Contact Lenses: For Extended Wear](<a href=“AIR OPTIX® NIGHT & DAY® AQUA Contact Lens | AirOptix.com”>AIR OPTIX® NIGHT & DAY® AQUA Contact Lens | AirOptix.com)

I just got my 6 months supply for $146. I suspect you can do better price-wise other places.

Ds and I use two weeks (me) and monthlies (for them). Our cost is significantly less than 300 a year – more like 140 or 160. We use the manufacturer’s rebates and/or 1-800-Contacts.

Yeah, the price on dailies seems to be about twice what we pay now…not going to run to get them yet…

kathiep: I also wear the Ciba lenses like MOWC. I have astigmatism and I wear a slightly different kind: [AIR OPTIX for ASTIGMATISM Contacts: Comfortable, Consistent Vision](AIR OPTIX® for Astigmatism Contact Lens | AirOptix.com)
My eye doctor said to take them out once a week, and change them after 30 days. I’ve had no problems with them.

I got them at Costco and paid $199.00 for a one year supply. However, I also had about $50 in rebates, which brought the price down.

I have astigmatism, so I have to wear toric (weighted) lenses. Mine are monthlies, as most toric lenses are.

I was having a lot of problems with dryness and had several infections/a nice area of hypoxia on my cornea until I changed to my current brand, and started using Clear Care as my contact solution. Clear Care’s solution is partially hydrogen peroxide, and it uses a special upright case with a disc that reacts to the hydrogen peroxide. You do have to leave them in the solution for 6 hours for it to neutralize and you can’t rinse off your contacts directly with the solution, but my contacts feel SO much cleaner than they ever did before and I haven’t had any infections since I switched.

As usual, what kind of lenses you wear depends on you. I have gas permeable (next generation from the old hard lenses) bifocals and adore them. Nothing throw away about them, easy to clean and store, harder to get used to but since I’ve been wearing hard lenses for about 37 years I’m fine.

Older daughter wears two week, has no problem in college with them.

Younger daughter wears daily and loves them. They are about twice as expensive as the two week.

Oh, and both girls have fun colored 2 week lenses that they wear on occasion just because!

We (myself, my daughter and my son) use monthlies, but I don’t think any of us pays attention to when 30 days are up. We wear them until they get uncomfortable, then throw them away and use another one. S just switched to the kind that are weighted for astigmatism.

All 3 of us were having trouble with dry eyes and switched to Clear Care solution, and for all 3 of us the problems went away. The eye dr said it the preservative in our previous solution could build up in the eyes and lead to dry-eye. With the hydrogen-peroxide-bubbly Clear Care, the contacts are really clean, really sterile, and there’s no preservatives in the solution to build up in the eyes. We’re all happy!
