Convincing my parents

So I want to take the ACT,but my parents think I should take both the ACT and the SAT. I took a practice test for the SAT and the highest I’ve hit was 1930 and that’s pretty low for my reach school. I love the ACT test 20x more and I’m scoring higher already than my sat score with my practice tests but my parents still think I need to submit both to colleges. They think that the ACT is looked down on and that colleges want to see the SAT. What could I tell them to not force me into taking the SAT and only taking the ACT.Thanks

You could show them the school’s common data set (Section C8) which explicitly shows which whether they take the ACT OR SAT, or one over the other. Also, I’ve been at several college panels / fairs where reps were specifically asked the question and have answered “no preference”. Finally, if you do an info session at the school, that could be an opportunity to ask with them present.

College admissions have changes SO much over the last few decades and, back in the day, the SAT was much more highly regarded, particularly on the coasts. It’s all about educating your parents to the “new world”. Good luck!

You should show your parents that know the ACT is looked as the same level as the SAT. Schools don’t have preference. Also which schools are you looking for because I have known that some schools require to send all your scores from SAT and ACT?

Cornell. They require all tests so I didn’t want to take the sat and bomb it so I that’s why i took the practice test. @Jr12317

Don’t take it!
Definitely, it can hurt your chances. What’s your score on the ACT?

@Jr12317 I paid for the June 13th test but i got a 30C on my practice test. Trying to get it to a 32/33 before the test. I’ll probably retake it in september for a 34.

Yep for Cornell and other IVY leagues. A 34+ will be enough. Best of luck!

Take a look at the entrance requirements, as well as the 25th and 75th percentile grades, of both exams at the schools you’re interested in.

@bjkmom I did. Cornell takes either test but they’re still being stubborn. I’m heading for a tour in a few weeks and hopefully someone there is convincing enough to them.

Would an email from your guidance counselor help calm their fears?

@bjkmom That may do it actually! I can’t believe i didn’t think of that. I’ll tell you how it goes!

Good luck!!

@bjkmom So my guidance is really inexperienced with colleges above state schools and my parents went in for a meeting her her today. She said Cornell recommends that we take both SAT AND ACT and send both scores. I know cornell doesn’t participate in score choice and now my parents are forcing me to take the september sat. Anything else I could do as a desperate attempt?

What do you have to lose by taking the exam?

@bjkmom If i get a low score i have to send my scores to cornell because they don’t take score choice.

  1. Have a Cornell admissions officer talk to your parents
  2. Don’t go to your test (fake a migraine or something)
  3. Find a reason to have your scores cancelled (leave the room, look like you’re cheating, etc. colleges will just think you didn’t show up) and tell your parents that the rude proctor accused you of cheating

I can’t believe your parents are that adamant on it. Your only other choice is to prep like crazy to get your SAT up.

Sorry to say this but you don’t have any other option. Can anybody else talk to your parents?
Do you know if they choose the best score of the SAT or ACT?

lol if I were you then I would go to the SAT test, start trollin and then just get kicked out. I wouldn’t take the risk and then end up sending a low score to a school like Cornell. Gl m8.

I would absolutely NOT sacrifice my reputation by getting thrown out of the test!!!

I could try and skip the test and tell my parents that I postponed it to January. By then I’ll have my cornell decision and it won’t matter. I don’t wan to really lie but it seems this is my last option. And btw… i def. won’t try to look like I’m cheating wtf LOL
