“It could just be the best public college you’ve never heard of, with prices so low that it’s a steal even for out-of-state students”. Kiplinger Article

GVSU was also ranked one of the safest colleges in the US recently, and the campus is gorgeous and the dorms are just outstanding. I’ve yet to hear anything negative about it.

I know that this time of year Juniata College has “tenting”. The idea is to get the prime seating for their Madrigal dinner (students are served by professors and staff). Tenting means camping out for days (perhaps weeks). Attendance is taken so someone I think needs to always be with their tent. The camping out has to do with wanting a special table at this dinner and has something to do with 5 golden rings. I don’t know if you’d find it cool, but some students find this to be fun. They have several other interesting traditions throughout the year.

^^^
The Madrigal dinner ends with everyone singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with various sections of the dining hall acting out the different parts of the song. Apparently “five golden rings” is the favorite part of the song.

I think Mountain Day is their coolest tradition. One morning around 5:00 a.m., a few people run through the dorms hollering “Mountain Day!” and they call all of the professors at home to tell them. Classes are canceled and everyone flocks to one of the state parks in the area for a picnic and games. The most unique element of Mountain Day is that no one knows in advance when it is going to occur.

Unfortunately, S decided to go somewhere else…

At Schoolcraft Community College (somebody else mentioned A CC so I guess they count) in Livonia, MI, their video production club does real television broadcasts of all the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) hockey games, and anybody can be trained and jump in right away regardless of their program. I was planning on going into film and video at the time so that was a great opportunity to get familiar with industry standard equipment with no competition and no strings attached. Even if you don’t want to do the whalers games they’ll train you on the equipment for free at your convenience.

I heard on the radio that Chapman U in SoCal is bringing in puppies as a stress reducer during finals week. No kidding, about ten pooches will be made available. Makes sense to me. Studies have shown they can reduce blood pressure and the students may just be missing their own furry friends back at home.

I thought this was very cool: Electrical engineering students at The University of Scranton reconfigured an XBOX to meet the physical capabilities of a 15-year-old boy with a spinal cord injury.

Also, the food service company and volunteers from the university will prepare and serve breakfast on Christmas morning for anyone in the city who wishes to attend.

kitty, now that is cool! I know that many many schools throughout our country have good deeds like the ones you listed going on annually, and that is a wonderful thing.

I have always loved the University of Dayton’s “Christmas on Campus” celebration where students, faculty and alumni invite the community to gather and celebrate. The students “adopt” 800 school kids for the night. The festivities include mass, food, crafts, a carnival, entertainment and a candlelight walk.

I don’t know if Loyola chicago is considered a lesser-known school but on the first week they have:
"10 PM 12 AM

Take a trip to Target for anything you need or may have forgotten at home. Target has extended its hours exclusively for Loyola students! The final bus will depart from Target at midnight to return students back to campus. MUST PRESENT STUDENT ID TO PARTICIPATE!"
