Copeley or Gooch??

I am a 3rd year transfer.
I was looking for apartments in the area but didn’t find any i liked (pricey or too far) so i was stuck with on-campus. I applied and got put in copeley which is double occupancy.
I emailed the housing person (i think) and asked if i can be switched to gooch (single).
If i am given that opportunity to move to gooch, should i take it?
I haven’t been to either so i don’t know what they are like.

Also it’s probably way too late (2 days till i have to sign contract) but which is the best place to stay on-campus? I doubt it’s any of those two that i mentioned.
I would rather single occupancy and not too far from the college of arts and sciences.

Thanks

Both of those are far, buch Gooch is closer. Copeley you have to take the bus. Gooch you can sort of walk but will prefer to take the bus. The best ones for next year you’ll find out are Bice, Lambeth… Neither of those is singles though. There aren’t really singles closer to grounds than Gooch, unless you live in IRC (residential college).

So if i want a single, my best bet is gooch then. Hope they let me in! lol

Why are bice/ lambeth so good? If you don’t mind me asking… like compared to copeley

Bice is like 1000 ft. away from New/Old Cabell Hall, Wilson Hall and like 500 ft. to the new South Lawn classrooms. (Most A&S classes are here.) The location is amazing.

Lambeth isn’t as close to your classes, but it is close to the Rotunda, Rugby Rd (like Main St. for Greek Life) and about a 10 minute walk to the Corner (shops/restaurants). Decent social scene here.

There’s no way you could get into B or L at this point. Frankly, Gooch or Copely would be just as expensive as somewhere like Oxford Hill or down JPA and those places are a lot closer. But, if you feel like you have to go with one of those two things, I’d go with Gooch. Copeley is generally upper-class housing and grad students mixed in. You’re more likely to meet more people in Gooch.

I couldnt find any good apartments that were around 500$ (plus utilities around JPA) that were close.
especially since it’s 12 month lease

It all depends on what you want. S1 was a 3rd year transfer & lived in Copely. He also lived in Lambeth. Copely is more spacious, the apartments are larger & nicer than Lambeth, but Lambeth is located closer to Grounds. Lambeth is older, more run down, and had a TON of dust in the air (dust bunnies EVERYWHERE - in printer, under bed, etc!).

Copely is definately farther away than Gooch/Dillard, but it is quiet & you can escape from the 1st year party scene. It is also closer to JPJ Arena, Barracks Rd shopping center & the Harris Teeter grocery store. Copely has its own social scene. There tend to be more upperclassmen & grad students in Copely. It’s not a bad place to be.

Plus S1 got put in a 4-person apt and his roommate never showed up, so he had a room to himself. Bonus!

12rmh18, Keep in mind that Lambeth is being renovated…

It’s just the whole roommate thing that i don’t like. i had a roommate in my old uni for first two years and i hate it.
But if it comes down to it i will just stay at copeley. I just hope it doesn’t.
Hope the distance isn’t going to be a problem though.

Lambeth renovated?! Ha! It figures they would renovate after he graduated.

Wally, Copely isn’t so bad. If you are into exercise & fitness, you will be very close to a gym. And the university bus stop is right in front of the complex.

Definitely into exercise… i know both gooch and copeley are close to gyms so happy for that. I also think it won’t be too bad… hopefully i don’t have to find out lol.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

I was in the same situation: I got assigned Copeley, but then a spot opened for Dillard (Dillard and Gooch are part of the same complex, essentially), and I chose to go with Dillard. The ONE downside was that Dillard/gooch do not have kitchens in each of the dorms, but the Runk dining hall is literally a roll out of bed from Dillard. I chose dillard mostly for location: when I visited the campus and realized how FAR Copeley is, and how early the bus routes going to Copely end at night, I settled for Dillard. If you want a more professional atmosphere with all the room amnemities of a full sized apartment (one bathroom for every 2 ppl, kitchens, more space, etc) then go for Copely. If you want something with more privacy, andcloser to Central, dining halls, and classes, then choose Gooch.

Yeah you may want to look at Dillard - most of Gooch will be 1st year housing this year. or even Hereford which I think is upperclassman this year as well.

Copeley is a series of disconnected apartments. You share a common stair but unlike a hall setup or even Lambeth your unlikely to get to know your neighbors. It’s also too far from grounds. The bus ride takes twenty minutes. For this your paying more than 550 a month not including parking? It simply doesn’t make any sense. You can find off grounds housing that’s much closer for a fraction of the price.

yea, i have emailed the housing people and asked to be switched to dillard if possible.
Hopefully that happens

RhapsodyinBlue, did you accept copeley and then switch out? or did you just ask to be switched without accepting?
Because i was told that i have to accept copeley and then switch sep 7th if anything is available.

EWLW i tried to find off ground housing that close and around 550, but i didn’t find anything that i liked.
Most are without utilities anyways so they end up being around 600-700 range and still too far.
