Cornell Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

Good luck you guys
Time flies haha

When is the last day to take subject tests for ED?

id like to know this also

SAT subject tests are offered 6 times per year: Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, May and June. So for ED, probably October is the last date, since ED applications are due November 1. You want to make sure your scores arrive in time so you do not have an incomplete application.

I agree 100% with TiggyB62. Please give yourself extra time in regards to deciding when to take the test.

I was waiting on one of my test scores to comeback which was late for some reason, and I remember that being an extremely stressful time for me. If possible, try and set things up so that your test scores are already showing online before you even have to submit your application.

I’ll be applying ED to Cornell Arts and Sciences this year for a major in history. Any other history majors out there?

Right now I’m not actually filling out the Common App essays or supplement (I guess they’re not out yet anyway), but I am trying to get my teacher recommendations done by the end of this school year so as to alleviate some stress and deadlines for myself (and my teachers, of course).

I don’t know if any of you have done the same, but maybe it’s a good idea to get out of the way as much as you can before November’s upon you. Good luck, everyone!

Haha this thread is very early but I guess it can’t hurt to be prepared  I didn’t even know I was applying Cornell, let alone ED, until two weeks before the deadline… Fortunately I was accepted, and I can’t wait to attend in the Fall. I’ll share some advice that I wish I knew before/when I applied. First things first, there and NO INDICATORS of whether or not you will get in, you WILL NOT know until the decisions are released; I did not get an interview, there was nothing different about my portal beforehand, and I was still accepted. Chance me threads are pointless and don’t make one or read one, they’ll just make you more anxious and nervous. This forum is great and definitely helps pass the time. And most importantly, relax! Things will fall in place

@cornell19 speaks the truth!. My D was ED and will also be attending this fall. I will echo: don’t do ā€œchance meā€. It is utterly pointless. If you want to see stats of those accepted, go to the ā€œClass of 2019 EDā€ thread on CC and read it. There are students with various test scores, both on the higher side and lower side that got either accepted or rejected. GPAs vary as well. There are kids with lots of ECs and some kids with not that many who got accepted or rejected. You get the point here. Take a good look and see where you fall in. You probably are all quite qualified, but there is no magic number or formula for acceptance.

Cornell is very much about fit. I personally would keep your rigor and grades as high as possible, and write a very good ā€œwhy Cornellā€ supplemental essay (or whatever the topic will be for next year). Be mindful of deadlines. You do not want an incomplete application. Make sure all your tests are completed by the required deadline, including SAT II subject tests. Since admissions are made by individual college, DON’T compare yourself to others who are applying to a different college than you, like CAS or ILR, Hotel etc. As a matter of rule, you shouldn’t be comparing yourself to others anyway. You are all unique in your own great way, so embrace that!

There are no interviews for admission purposes except in the Hotel and Architecture schools. All other ā€œinterviewsā€ are informational only and are provided by Cornell Alumni Association Network volunteers in your region of the country. Not everyone gets contacted for one, so DO NOT fret about this. It has no bearing on admissions. Cornell explicitly states this on their website.

Keep your focus on your 1st quarter senior year grades, as these will be required for ED applicants. Also make sure you have a well rounded list of colleges (reach schools, safety school etc) you will be applying to. You do not need to apply to 20 schools but do not put all your eggs in one basket. That’s a recipe for major disappointment. If you are going ED, make sure your family has run the NPC so there will be no surprises about cost. Make sure all your financial aid info is submitted by the ED deadline as well. The FA website has all the required dates and info. This ensures that, if admitted, Cornell can get your FA package to you within a week of acceptance or sooner.

Cornell admissions will let you know via email when decisions will be made available, so don’t keep calling them. Last year, it was on December 11th at 5 PM EST. If you are missing anything from your application, they will let you know via email and you will have time to submit it. Also keep in mind that they get thousands of applications and they only update their application status portal site once per day, so if you don’t see that your application has been received yet, don’t panic. Sometimes it can take up to five days. Once it has been received, you will get an email with a appID that you can use to check your status (ie: did test scores arrive, has transcript arrived, etc). A day or two before decisions come out, they will email you with another specific login and instructions to access your decision letter. You will not log in with your appID for security and privacy purposes. The online acceptance letter is the actual letter you will also receive in the mail a few days after decisions come out. A $400 deposit is required by mid-January.

In the meantime, enjoy your summer, get a job, do fun stuff, make some college visits if you can, and work on your common app essay. Then on August 1st, you can create your common app account and let the admissions madness begin! Keep checking the Cornell admission website to see if they have posted the supplemental essay info, otherwise it will also be available via the common app.

Prospective Cornell ILR student here! So excited to begin the application process this summer, attending the school would literally be a dream come true. Good luck to the rest of you current juniors!

Hey I have a couple quick questions. I’ll probably ED CoE or CAS and so if I decide to send in my ACT score… will I have to send in my SAT scores as well? Also… do I need to send all of my subject test scores or just the 2 they require? For example say I took math 2x and and physics 2x… can I just send in the highest score from each test or do I need to send ALL of them? I have seen a lot of contradicting answers and was hoping somebody could clear it up for me. Thanks!

@Brownster98 Even if you send your act score you will have to send all scores to cornell. They DO NOT take score choice so you will send your ACT, SAT, math(both scores), and physics(both scores).

^ not true. Call admissions and ask. The way they explain on the website is confusing, but I was told by admissions if you are using your ACT, you need to send all ACTs but don’t have to send SAT and vice versa. I can’t recall what they said about subject test scores. But do yourself a favor and call admissions to clarify rather than taking someone’s interpretation of those rather unclear instructions.

Ok thank you @Renomamma. I was confused as well and I sent them an email regarding the subject test scores.

Calling is quicker. I never had success hearing back from emails.

To avoid all confusion, my D just sent all of her scores: ACT/SAT/SATII but I agree, you should call for clarification.

If anyone calls please share!

@Brownster98 I’m not sure how it works specifically for CoE or CAS, but I applied ED and was accepted to CALS after sending only my ACT scores.
I had taken the SAT but no subject tests. For me, and CALS, the ACT scores alone were enough. Each college has different requirements, so I would be sure to check.

it feels so scary, its now our time to start filling out these forums… going for CAS to major in chemistry. I just wish cornell did score optional, but did anyone call and hear back from admissions office yet?

Hi everyone, I plan to apply to Cornell from the ED 2015. i’m from Ireland. Do you know if international students get financial aid?

So if you send all your scores, they only consider the highest ones, is this correct?
