@idealni1 No it will not hurt you. just make sure somewhere on your application you note that you could only take them soph-senior year.
How much does it hurt taking 3 years of a foreign language as opposed to 4? Cuz I was thinking about replacing AP Spanish with another elective, and I already am scheduled to take Calc BC, Physics C, Physics 2, Bio, Java, English Lit, Currently Spanish (All AP), then Marching Band, Gym
Could someone please give an input on my previous two posts (not to be demanding or anything…)? I’m not the only one with a desire for some info on the aforementioned subjects, as @miws103 shows. I would especially appreciate if someone could confirm that these are this year’s essay prompts for Cornell and Common App:
http://admissions.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/Essays and Questions.pdf
Sure it sounds stupid since it says “2015-2016” in both links, but the year notation for financial aid for Cornell is wacky and counter-intuitive, so I just wanted to know if the essay prompt links were the same in confusion-factor or not…
Thanks!
@homsar AP Spanish would look really good if you’re not a native speaker.
So just wondering Like this comment if your’e applying to human ecology
What’s the Common Application Essay word limit? Does anyone know? If someone could answer this question and my previous ones, I’d appreciate it, thanks.
@ArthurDent42 It’s 650 words. As far as I know, Cornell doesn’t change their essay prompts from year to year.
@Homsar I don’t believe not taking a fourth year of Spanish would hurt you. Arts & Sciences does not even recommend anything past three years, I think. I’m not sure what the other colleges want, but I doubt not taking a fourth year when it’s neither required nor recommended would hurt your application in a substantial way.
Thanks!!
Does Cornell allow one to double major?
Prolly…

So, is anyone able to answer my original question about how you lucky kids got friggin research positions at Columbia and Harvard and act like it’s no big deal?
Lol i don’t anyone this thread got an internship or is doing research at Harvard or Columbia. I have one at my local university but that’s it. It isn’t difficult to get them. Just send a blast email to all professors and ask. That’s always the first step. @ArthurDent42
I did last February (to give 'em plenty of time), and although they worked their butts off to try and get me a research position, they didn’t have room because they were booked with their own students (btw they are a college, not a university, so they don’t have grad students, so I thought it’d be easier to get a position because of this fact). Oh well. I “replaced” that with a job at a dog kennel, which has been a ton of fun, but won’t look as good as research in astrophysics. Too bad I can’t put, “Hey, I tried to get a research position but the college I contacted was full and there are no other colleges with astronomy/astrophysics majors in my area/state!” on my common app, to at least let Cornell know I tried.
Enough of my ranting, what’s research like? Ecology, that’s cool! How do you do useful research if you haven’t even taken undergrad classes in your prospective field? I’ve always wondered about that…too bad I couldn’t get the astrophysics research position, then I’d answer my own question and somehow learn how to do useful research even though I don’t know anything above Calc 1 (AB Calc) math-wise and have only taken the equivalent of an exceptionally basic intro physics college class (AP Physics 1 and 2), with nothing more…?
I was referring to people in the Cornell ED 2019 Results Thread, not this thread, btw, sorry for the confusion!
@daniel98609 The most selective colleges like to see that you’ve taken bio, chemistry and physics. Is physics and option for the coming year?
Going for human development so far AP wise this is what i’ve taken including upcoming senior year:
Science: AP Physics1,AP Biology, AP Environmental Science
Math:AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science
History:AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Government, AP European History
Languages: AP French Lang&Culture
English: None lol I dual enrollment at my university for enc1101 and 1102 so kind of ap xD.
So is Cornell a liberal arts school or not? A silly question for someone who is quite obsessed with the school, perhaps, but I can never find a straight answer via google. I just want to know if I can avoid taking classes that don’t apply to my major (astrophysics/astronomy), unless the school is going to force me take random classes well into my four years because they’re a liberal arts school. To be frank, I’d like to be done with English classes by at least my sophomore year, and would prefer that the only classes I’m taking during my junior and senior year be classes that relate to astronomy/astrophysics in some way. My backup/safe school is a liberal arts school and will have me taking Western Civics in my junior year, which I know will be obnoxious…and I thought the whole point of college was to focus on one study I actually enjoy…
@hs2015mom It may be a little late for that, but I could ask. I’m curious to know how much it would hurt me not taking high school physics, though. I don’t believe Cornell’s Arts and Sciences recommends or requires classes in all three sciences: the only recommendation I see is for four years of science with one of those years being advanced (which I’ve already taken in the form of AP Chemistry). The main issue as I see it is that I would be jumping directly into AP Physics C next year without having learned anything of general Physics.
@ArthurDent42 Cornell is definitely not a liberal arts college, but the College of Arts and Sciences does mandate that you take several required courses to graduate, including a few years of foreign language and if I remember correctly history and English requirements. I’m sure that in your junior and senior years you’ll be able to focus pretty exclusively on your major, however. If you really don’t want to do anything involved with English or History you could always apply to a similar major in Engineering instead. Good luck with everything, though!
@daniel98609 Don’t jump into AP Physics C without prior physics knowledge. you will likely do very poorly in the class. They said we didn’t need anything for AP Physics 1 are you can see who that turned out so physics c is a whole new game. What are all your options for next year science?
