What do people know about if deferral is actually rejection? According to one website I saw (Iv***se) they said that over half are actually rejected so deferral would be better?
Cornell does reject students in ED so the deferral means your child is still in the running. Their application will be reassess against the rest of the RD pool. Fingers crossed for better news in the spring!

My DS was accepted in CAS (biology)!!! We are so proud of him. A generous aid package as well.

On April 1 or whenever RD releases. My D21 (same legacy, maybe not as high SAT as yours) also got deferred. And she finally got rejected on April 1 (or April 3).

I don’t believe Cornell releases that information.
Don’t have the stats. But also add in: a decent number of the deferrals, especially legacies, eventually get offered guaranteed sophomore transfer.

daughter accepted CAS (bio & Spanish) - joins her older sister (2026)!
older sister’s journey to acceptance was deferral, then WL, then accepted off WL April 30th so the path can be long but work out!
deferred students - be sure to update with mid-year grades, any honors etc.

Transfer is no longer guaranteed. Since Cornell started requiring sophomores to live in dorms, they have a housing shortage. Some current students have been waitlisted for housing the last two years.
