Cornell ED Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

Does Signing for Cornell Aid has an impact on ED ? My Kids resume was very good and GPA scores were ok too. He got rejected. I read that if you are applying for ED then one should not look for Aid it makes your application weak ?

Cornell is need blind.

thanks for the response What does that really Mean ? I am feeling sorry that we checked that box. I read in many forums which says ED means you are in it no matter what no strings attached it shows you are committed financial laibility is a string which is a risk you have an option of saying No.

Quora Post. It is certainly not need-blind for International freshman applicants. That is a given.

Whereas many of the elite private US universities claim they are need-blind for US applicants. If their endowments are three times or more larger than their annual operating budget, then it is Easy to be need-blind.

However, it is good to always Assume that all colleges are need aware, even though I am positive that MIT and Harvard, etc. are need-blind.

Cornell is much Larger and has seven undergraduate colleges, four of which it operates as a land-grant college for the State of New York system. I would find it difficult to believe that Cornell can be need-blind for those four colleges.

@sp2 Need blind means that they do not consider your financial need at all when looking at your application. Financial aid office works independently from admissions. Not that it’s any consolation, but had you not checked the box, the result would have been the same.

We applied for financial aid and my daughter was accepted. It made no bearing on the decision. The College of Engineering had no idea that we applied for aid because of the need blind process. The common app doesn’t even ask if you’re applying for financial aid, unlike other schools on the common application.

If you had not checked the box, and were accepted, you would not have then wanted to be tasked with coming up with loans of $75k to attend and then wonder if you should have applied for financial aid, thus you made the right decision to apply for financial aid, even though you are second guessing that decision. I understand your feeling about it as it was a struggle I had as well.

I believe it is different for International however.

Cornell is need blind for domestic students. The process for admissions and financial aid are completely separated. My D applied for FA ED and was accepted. But each school at Cornell handles its own admission decisions so you can’t compare acceptance in one school to another as one may be looking at things much differently than another. Some schools will be more competitive in certain years depending on the applicant pool.

@sp2 Financial aid I do not think affects your chances of getting in.

I got rejected and did not apply for aid. These were my stats:

College of Human Ecology. 34 ACT (35 M, 35 R, 34 E, 33 S); 3.95/4 Unweighted and 5.1 Weighted; 11 AP Classes; 1000 plus service hours; Legacy; Class Rank: 14/526; Did not apply for Financial Aid; Also in 8 Honor Societies, Varsity Lacrosse, and involved in many clubs at my school

@sp2 thank you so much! Everything happens for a reason, I am sure we will all find an amazing place to go. Living in Miami I feel Ithaca might have not been my cup of tea. Anyways, Congrats to everyone!!! You are all so intelligent

Does anyone know what the package looks like and includes?

Some have asked - but any idea by anyone in this thread what the #s on deferrals who end up being accepted in the Spring looks like?

My D was accepted to the COE – we are so grateful and happy. She received her letter today, and in it it said that the admissions committee recommended that she take an additional course in both calc and physics. She already completed AP calc and college physics (accredited through the local community college). I was wondering whether any one else has had this recommendation in their acceptance letter? Our high school doesn’t offer anything above what she has already taken.

what major? @av0cado7

@Hardtime Our S was accepted to CoE, too, but hasn’t received a letter yet. We’re in Texas, so maybe that accounts for the delay? Where are you? Also, which calculus did she take? Our son had calc BC as a junior, and there’s nothing for him this year, so his only STEM class this year is Physics C. I expect we’ll get a similar recommendation, so he doesn’t arrive on campus rusty from not having had math for a year.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but does anyone know when financial aid packages should come out?

@Hardtime I’m curious too as to where you live that you received your letter so quickly as we haven’t but we’re in the midwest. They may also be telling you that the credit doesn’t transfer over from that college or that it’s not equivalent to their courses.

@TXMom2016 My D was also accepted to COE. She took BC last year and is in a Dual Credit MVC this year and is in Physics C, and received 5 on the AP BC test. However, it looks like Cornell only will give credit for Calc I anyway. After speaking to some friends with kids there, we’re leaning towards encouraging her to just start in the first Calc anyway just to get the refresher and to be on the same page as everyone else for the second class, unless for some reason they do give her the full year of credit based on the Dual credit she will have. I fully expect. the college she is earning the credit from won’t be on par with what Cornell expects either.

I guess we will see if her letter has any recommendation in it though.

@TXMom2016 & srparent15 – we are in NY, about 10 miles from Cornell, lol. My D also took calc and physics as a junior, none this year since there is nothing more offered, so maybe you are right TXMom2016 that they are suggesting that the student do some refresher work before entering the CoE?

@hardtime If you’re that close to Cornell, it may also have to do with the college she received the course from since Cornell would most definitely be familiar with the quality of the course relative to Cornell. If TXMom2016 does get that same letter, I guess I’m wrong.

Out of curiosity, is the letter a packet or just a mailing? So exciting!!

For anyone waiting for financial aid by the way, they don’t send anything in the mail. The only notification is what was online and I wouldn’t exactly call it an “award” letter. Lol.
