Cornell Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

can we not use the shorthand lol, i still don’t know for all the schools

GTO: guaranteed transfer option
CALS: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
GPA: grade point average

Yeah no clue what GTO is but CALS is def. College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

GT is Guaranteed Transfer. Cornell gives out GTs to some people that they reject, saying “if you meet 3.x GPA and fulfill __ courses, you can come next Fall”.

If anyone is from a California CC, Cornell’s GT is basically what TAG is for us.

Wow, that is really neat! I had no idea they did this!

@busybee1234 I don’t think you’d be eligible for GT anymore but don’t take my word for it. I would call them if I were you.

@busybee1234 you don’t apply for the Transfer Option, you receive that offer during the regular decision releases of your senior year. If you didn’t meet course requirements, then it’s a concern. Meeting all the requirements both academic and disciplinary will guarantee you admissions, but not doing either or both will place you in the regular transfer applicant pool. In other words, your odds of admissions will decrease. Best of luck.

@IzzoOne I have looked into the GAA for UVA and W&M, but as a business major, I can’t use it for UVA. As for W&M, I may decide to try it there after completing my AS, I kinda just applied as a sophomore transfer to see if I could get in.

Hey all! Just wanted to know what you think my chances are for a Fall 2019 Cornell Transfer?

Honestly not sure as there seem to be much more qualified people in this discussion haha!

College Stats:

Honors Calculus 3 - A
Honors Linear Algebra - A
Advanced Physics 1 - A
Advanced Physics 2 - A
Modern Physics (Physics 3)- A
Physics Lab 1 - A
Physics Lab 2 - A

Courses Currently Taking:

Astroparticle Physics (400/500 Level)
Waves & Oscillations (Physics 4)
Honors Writing and Critical Inquiry
Differential Equations
Physics Lab 3

Research:

I have done four semesters of research in the Astroparticle Physics Lab at the University at Albany. There, I am working on an alternative way to possibly detect dark matter.

Academic Papers:

One (possibly two) will be published by the end of May.

Conferences:

American Physical Society Conference - April 2018
UAlbany Undergraduate Research Conference - May 2018
Astronomical Society of New York - March 2019

Main Extra Curricular:

I don’t do clubs because I am insanely packed with research, but I have been creating hundreds of math and physics tutorials on my YouTube channel for the past couple years, and my videos are now beginning to compete with Khan Academy, and the Organic Chemistry Tutor. Hopes are to soon begin constructing online courses that are going to be placed on a virtual campus (kinda like a video game).

High School Stats:

Struggled with depression freshman and sophomore year so I will include my yearly averages for context:

Overall Average ~ 87%

Freshman Year - 80% - Almost failed History and English
Sophomore Year - 84%
Junior Year - 94%
Senior Year - 96% Took AP Calculus and got a 5 on AP Test

Never studied for SAT (stupid idea) got a 1300 in HS with a 580 English and 720 Math.

Comments:

Literally have been working 18 hour days for the past 2 years to make this happen… I only applied to Cornell, because it didn’t require the SAT. Funny thing is that I had to send in my SAT scores anyway because I took them in high school. I wish you all luck! But if you’re a physics major… not too much luck

these decisions just need to be released!!

Friendly update: Someone from the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship thread said they spoke to someone from Cornell and that some decisions should start rolling out next week. Not sure about authenticity but I think it was through PTK catalyst if that helps. I’m hoping that’s the case but don’t have my hopes high as the wait is already painful so keeping my sight set on May 1st.

@kingslayer68 AMEN!

Oh geez I don’t know if I’m mentally prepared for decisions to come out next week

Man that really sucks that results might not come out until May. I have until May 1st to submit my intent to enroll for San Diego State University so if May 1st rolls around and decisions still aren’t out, I’m just going to have to forget about waiting for Cornell because I’m not going to risk it when I already have my local school that accepted me. It’s a shame because of all the effort I put into applying to Cornell, but they’re a little too late in the game. Guess we’ll see what happens. The main reason I applied to Cornell was to qualify for the full ride scholarships they give to low income students, but then again I’m pretty sure I’m getting tuition at SDSU covered in grants so eh either way I’ll be fine.

Did you apply to any other schools with a later commitment date ?

In previous years, I have heard that decisions are released starting from the third Tuesday of April, which would be April 16. It may not be the case this year, but that has happened the past few years, so it is a possibility.

@polarrrize I think you should submit your deposit to SDSU before May if Cornell doesn’t release their decision, but if you get accepted and are satisfied with the financial aid package, then I think you can ask for a deposit refund and then submit one to Cornell. I’m not 100% sure, but that’s at least what I’ve heard people doing when they got off the waitlist for their first choice school.

yeah I second @enviscimath11 's advice. go ahead and pay the deposit at SDSU. If Cornell accepts you then you can always cancel.

I received the TO out of HS, but I guess it may not apply to me anymore…

@busybee1234 I’m guessing you didn’t reply to Cornell on time that you’d commit to participating in the transfer option opportunity. I’m also a CALS TO

Hi! I applied as a Fall 2019 transfer into ILR and would appreciate some feedback.

School: Fordham University (attended another school for one semester before taking a leave of absence for family health reasons)
Major: General Science
Credits: Will have 45 completed by the end of this year
College GPA: Including my prior school, 3.5. Disregarding the outlier semester, 3.85. Over a one point upward trend between the two schools. I also have A’s in all classes ILR prioritizes like economics and english
ACT: 33
College extracurriculars: Part of Division I Rugby Team, numerous finance-related clubs, intern at an investment bank in the city
Recommendations: ?/10
Obviously didn’t see them but it was written by a PhD economics professor and a pretty stellar english professor.
Essays 7.5/10: I think I did fairly okay on them but think I could’ve done better. I talked a lot about mental health issues and family health problems that have given me the motivation to succeed wherever I end up.
High School GPA: 4.0/4.0. Never ended with below an A- in a class
APs taken: Euro, English Lang&Composition, Bio, US History, Gov, Macro, Psych, and Chem. Got 5s on English and US and a 4 in Euro (do not want to talk about my scores on the others lol)
High school extracurriculars: Not a lot but some I committed a ton of time to. I was a peer mentor for some inner city students and would do a lot of volunteer work in nursing homes and such. Unfortunately no research or anything
Hooks: Don’t believe any

@enviscimath11 I did. I applied with the TO, just on my transcript I didnt take every single necessary class. I exceed the GPA requirement by 0.5, so I was wondering if they would be somewhat lenient with the courses.
