Cornell ILR Class of 2020 RD Thread

Anyone who’s applying (or thinking about applying) to ILR RD can post any questions/comments here. Look forward to going through this process with you all for the next few months.

I’m nervous though. . .I’ve heard that my chances are far bleaker than yours; however, I did forget to send in a number

of awards when I initially submitted my app. haha. . . :frowning:

GPA: 3.9 W
Full IB Diploma at rigorous private school in Florida

Most Important EC’s: President of Debate Team, Junior State of America, and Model UN. Varsity Archery. Political writer for school newspaper. Political campaign internships starting at thirteen with Julius Melendez for Congress, Republican Party of Florida, and Americans for Prosperity.

Hooks: First generation Hispanic student

Strong essay on how I got involved in politics and recommendations since my recommenders have known me for two years.

Strengths: Unique demographic background and ECs/Essay

Weakness: Lower end of the academic range.

Ecs: varsity captain and MVP for golf and bowling, a lot of other sports and awards for them…some generic volunteering, treasurer of Latin club, member of some others.

Common app essay is about working as a ref, suppl is about managing he store and labor relations…very strong. Seems like it went in a different direction than the typical essays.

Sorry for my ambiguous wording in describing my ECs. I do not want to reveal my identity for the sake of privacy.

Extracurriculars:

  • Founder, President of school organization for students who support Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid
  • Volunteer for Bernie Sanders’ campaign and representative for high school students for Bernie for my town’s Bernie association, organized a student coalition with my high school organization and 5 local universities.
    *Supervisor for a mountain restoration for a non-profit environmental organization with a focus on urban sustainable living
    *Intern for my state district assembly member, youngest intern they ever had
    *Member of “Aspiring Politicians” program for my district state senator, had to apply, will attend the state capitol with the senator

A couple thousand volunteer hours…not exaggerated, I actually kept time records. I would volunteer for about 6 hours a day in the summer.

So I was accepted to ILR last year, class of 2019, and I just wanted to say good luck to everyone! I hope that all of you are accepted and that you all choose to come here! ILR and Cornell in general was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I hope that you are all able to join me!
