Hi everyone!
This is my first post here on CC.
I’m an international student who is trying to choose between Cornell (Hunter R. Rawlings III Cornell Presidential Research Scholars) and Berkeley for Industrial Engineering.
I visited both schools, and liked both. There were certain things in both school that I didn’t like a lot, but not hated of course.
Since I am international I don’t know much about the reputation of this program at Cornell compared to that of Berkeley’s.
Which school would be a better choice? ( Academics, reputation, class sizes, housing, social life, location, class avaliability etc. are important factors)
Cost is not a factor since both will be nearly the same price for me. I want to do MBA afterwards( maybe after working for a couple years?).
I have to decide in a couple of days and I just can’t!! Any opinion will be appreciated!
(Will post this thread both on Cornell and Berkeley pages.)
Also, I am aware that there are a lot of threads on CC about this topic and have read them all, but couldn’t find one specifically for Rawlings Scholar and industrial engineering.
The choice is yours alone…sorry. It is matter of opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.
This is a thread specifically on rawlings scholarship:

This is a website about it:

All you are missing is somebody specifically applying it to industrial engineering.
The projects listed with faculty mentor in “Operations Research” here would be under the Industrial engineering purview:

http://www.commitment.cornell.edu/cprs/about/Student%20projects%202010-2011/Student%20Projects%202013-2014%20Engineering.php
These may not be exactly the same as what might want to do So the question is, what would you want to do with ? Maybe it would be best to contact some faculty in IE/OR and discuss it with them.
IE is definitely a major that is often used at Cornell as a springboard towards an MBA. Engineers can actually take a minor in the Dyson school now, too. However it seems like this Rawlings thing sets somebody up most ideally towards an eventual research degree. And it’s probably an amazing opportunity for that, that few people get. That doesn’t mean that is all it’s good for. You could probably swing it towards something that would give you expertise with financial quant work, for example, which might get you a good quant job on the Street. Possibly. Not that I’m guaranteeing that. There are definitely possibilties there. But it will be up to you to make something of those possibilities.
If your question is what is industrial engineering et al I refer you to many prior posts by CC poster redbeard. eg:

@Ikgrg17 @monydad thanks for your replies!
@monydad also thank you for providing me with so much links. I have already read the thread about Rawlings but I meant I couldn’t find a thread about someone who is in the same situation as me. (Berkeley vs Rawlings)
I really thank you, and will read the other threads about industrial engineering and will check the projects students have been involved with! I think I’m leaning towards Cornell, yet I am still worried about life in Ithaca. But Berkeley’s international reputation is also something I can’t help but consider since I am an international student as well, and may eventually decide to return to my country.
As long as you’re reading links, here’s a couple more:

@monydad It took a while, but I read them all. Thanks a lot!
